Remember the old days when almost every appliance manufacturer made a good toaster. It was cheap, lasted for years, browned bread evenly, and employed an audio signal when the toast was done. Nothing in today's marketplace can meet these simple specifications, but the Krups KH722D50 comes close. Here are the good and bad things about this unit.
.
.
ADVANTAGES
.
1. It is reasonably priced. At $35, it is mid-way between the basic $20 and the moderately expensive $50 units.
.
2. It has the longest warranty at two years. Many carry a 90-day to a one year guarantee.
.
3. The bread browns evenly on both sides without any burns on the edges or on one section. A majority of the toasters in today's marketplace can not do this basic task.
.
4. It looks like a traditional toaster. Others have tapered sides and frills that only make the toaster look bigger and fancier. They do nothing but justify higher prices.
.
5. The slots are over-sized. As a result, large muffins will fit.
.
6. The Germanic cultural trait is to over-engineer products and achieve the highest quality possible.
.
.
DISADVANTAGES
.
1. There is no audio signal to announce that the toast is ready.
.
2. The toast pops up only an inch. You need to push the lever up to retrieve the finished product.

After researching extensively on the web, I found that the Krups brand of toaster had the best reviews. So I ordered one from Amazon, which arrived today in excellent packaging. Just tried my first toasts: one sprouted whole wheat bread and one English muffin. Both turnout perfect! Toasted all around in both sides. The slots are large enough and long enough for different sizes of bread, which pop out high enough so not to burn my fingers. Great look too. I am pleased with this toaster and highly recommend it.

This toaster is great ! The design is simple and modern at the same time.
What I really like about it is all the features that I can use. For instance the defrost function is really useful because I can just defrost the bread I stored in my freezer in few minutes.
But the greatest feature is the re-heat function ! How many times did I put a slice of bread and got stuck on the phone just after that ? Then the time was coming to eat my COLD toast... Well not anymore ! LOVE IT !

I wanted to love this toaster. Looks good, sturdy, pops up, produces reliably colored english muffins at the same number setting. I was thrilled to replace my old toaster that I had to hover over to keep from burning or undercooking.

But that was with english muffins, which you really only notice the color of on one side. Then I started toasting toast. The first time I was puzzled. Why did it toast only on the side towards the middle? I tried toasting at different settings. I tried room temperature vs. refrigerated. I tried fooling myself, because I loooved being able to walk away from a toaster for the first time in 15 years. But to my great sorrow, nothing worked -- each piece of toast would cook only on the one side.

If you are going to only toast bagels or english muffins, buy this toaster! If you have an abundance of time and like to flip your bread and toast it twice, buy this toaster! If you actually want a toaster that works like a toaster should, stay far away.

I will preface this review in short to say that I have been purposely toaster-less for over 5 years; I couldn't find anything that was affordable, toasted properly and looked decent enough for a small spread in Dwell magazine. I have tried so many types of toasters: 2 slice, 4 slice, egg and slice, oven toaster, mini oven, rotisserie mini toasting bbq airplane machine...everything. While the swan song of my last toaster (RIP) still reverberated in my head, I solemly vowed to never claim ownership on another until I found "the one."

This review could very easily turn into a short story...based solely on the premise of my love for toast. As one could find 'brevity' on my TO DO list for 2012, I'll cut to the chase very quickly now...let's say we call it an early holiday gift for you. For the money, I don't think you can find such an attractive and well functioning toaster anywhere. I can honestly say I don't think I've had bread toast this evenly before. Especially in the non-processed, multi grain breads, it's very easy to notice minor burns or undertoasting, due to the various topographic densities of the grain breads. But this babycakes honeybunch of a toaster gracefully and silently (no Rattle & Hum here, sorry Bono) browns all types of bread with deadly accuracy. I have tried toasting on all settings, the expected out come is exactly that: 1 = very light and 5 = much darker. Even on 5, the toast still never came out looking like the rubble from an interstellar mishap...completely edible and toasty.

All in all, I highly recommend this toaster if you want a) affordability b) aesthetics c) amazing toast.

Note: I don't really eat bagels so I cant comment, but it looks like they would fit fine.

Bonus level: This toaster has a 'warm-up' function. How many times have you tossed the toast in, only to tell yourself you will be back in the allotted time for the toast to finish. You ran into your neighbor while taking out the trash so the 30 second chore turned into a 6 minute and 43 second interlude. Come back in and...dang. Cold toast :( Warm up the spirit of your toasted bread without any additional over-toasting...brilliant!

My wife asked for a new toaster for Christmas, and while I know you aren't supposed to buy your spouse a kitchen appliance as a gift, I did. Don't worry, I bought her some fun stuff too.

Unfortunately, the toaster I bought her was the 4 slice Cuisinart that has the buttons to start toasting recessed back from the front. Cuisinart seems to sell it in several colors. I bought the stainless version from Costco, and it's junk. Each slot toasted evenly, but the two slots on each button were different. If you made 2 slices, they weren't done the same. Worse, the slots on the Cuisinart were too short to fit an average slice of bread in. Cuisinart should be embarrassed their name is on that thing. Who makes a toaster than can't fit standard supermarket white bread. We returned it to Costco.

After reading reviews on lots of toasters on Amazon, I noticed that the 2 slot version of this toaster got great reviews, so I decided to order the 4 slice version, and I'm glad I did. I consider this a pricey toaster, but it toasts evenly, the slots are long enough for bread and wide enough for bagels. There's a tray that opens from the front for crumbs. I didn't realize it was there until I searched for it. You press in, it pops out, you put it back in, and you'd never realize it was there without searching. Nice design. I don't bother with the re-heat feature, but it is a clever one.

There are 4 or 5 clicks between each number setting, and it has a frozen button that adds time to each setting number for frozen bread/bagels. That makes me chuckle about over engineering a toaster, but it's not a real complaint. I don't have any real complaints about this toaster. I saw another reviewer say the spring is too strong, but ours has never shot the toast out. Hopefully their spring will loosen up. If mine had that issue, I'd have exchanged it. I find that this Krups is solid, works great, is easy to clean, can toast bagels and full size bread, and it isn't outrageously overpriced. I'd buy it again.

I've found Krupps products to be straightforward in design and very well built, so it frustrated me to return this toaster because the slots weren't long enough for our needs. We toast rye bread and sour dough a lot, and these slices are longer than the standard wheat or white, which barely fit this machine.

Amazon would do it's customers a favor by showing the slot length in addition to the other dimensions listed for each toaster.

I bought, over the course of a year, three different brand name toasters and none of them toasted evenly. I had to stand over the toaster and watch the doneness so I could turn the bread to toast on the other side or turn the bread upside down to toast the top bottom. I ordered the Krups, hoping maybe this one would work. FINALLY, I got a toaster that toasts evenly all over the bread and the degree dial gives the correct doneness. This one's a keeper. Thanks Krups.

We had the same negative experience that some other customers did: The toaster would toast perfectly one side and not at all on the other side (this is no exaggeration). We tried it for a couple of weeks, but were eventually forced to return it. The one positive experience was Amazon's pain-free return process. Maybe there was a bad production batch or simply uneven production quality: Clearly some customers seem very happy and some others have trouble with severely uneven toasting. Another complaint (less serious) is that the slots are on the narrow side, which would force us to push down bread slices by hand, using regular store bought sliced bread.

Simple, easy-to-use and at the right price for a Krups toaster. It has all the features I want and toasts my bread well. I like that if my bread does get stuck, I can use the lever to lift it up higher.
