Editorial Reviews

Product Description

'KA 'ANO'I,' release in 1990, was the first solo album by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. An exploration of new avenues, delving into material of a more contemporary nature. 'The kid with the 'ukulele' is defining himself as both a master musician and a superb entertainer. His brand of top form showmanship couples crisp, fresh 'ukulele stylings with a voice as rich as his deep Hawaiian heritage. A real treasure not only to the people of the islands, but to all who appreciates fine artistry.

Better known among his fans as "Iz," Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a phenomenon in the Hawai'ian Islands totally below Mainland radar. So important was Iz's singing to Native Hawa'ians and Hawai'i residents alike that Governor Ben Cayetano declared a statewide day of mourning when Iz passed away in 1997--this despite his controversial Hawai'i-sovereignty politics. Ka Ano'i was the 1991 winner of the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for best contemporary Hawai'ian album, and Iz himself won for best male vocalist that year. This album is appealing mainly for its honesty and simplicity: simplicity of tone consistent with the casual ukulele and slack-key sound, and honesty of voice through Hawai'i-enhanced allegorical tracks like "Coney Island Washer Woman" and "I'll Be There." A later version of Iz's "Over the Rainbow" was featured in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, as well. Despite his imposing stature, Iz was an embodiment of the simplicity and gentleness in the music itself, more noticeable in this early album than in his later work. --Erik Macki

This is a great album by IZ, however was looking for the version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World" that I heard on a tv toy commercial. The CD "Facing Future" is the one with the correct version.

If you can't appreciate the whole CD--go buy the soundtrack for Meet Joe Black! If you enjoy IZ, you'll like both versions of Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World. By the way, the Meet Joe Black version can be found on the Facing Future CD.

is only because of the sound quality. This early CD was before Israel signed with Mountain Apple Company and the recording quality isn't quite as good as his later CDs. Having said that, the music is great. For an Iz fan it's a must-have. It's the only recording on CD of Men Who Ride Mountains and I love his version of You Don't Know Me. Again, a must-have. Look for the video, Island Music Island Hearts - The Man and His Music. It's the only video, produced after his passing, and it gives you the sense of this man's immense love for people and their love for him.

I am a hawaiian and hawaii born and bred islander, I am blessed by the fact that my parents brought me up with hawaiian music but most of all the late great Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole. The day that shocked hawaii I was out and about with my family when my father stoppped at a gas station as he came out of the gas station a newpaper in his hand and a heartbroken look on his face..." what's the matter daddy" he handed me the paper and i started to cry there it was "Braddah Iz passed away at the age of 38 in his sleep last night" I couldn't beileve it such a beautiful voice silenced he will never make another record. But just to have had Braddah Iz on this earth for just this short time to hear the music with and without the makaha sons of Niihau is truly magical..so his music lives on. I've read all these amazing reviews of Braddah IZ...I am happy and touched that so many people have been touched by his music. Unforunately i didn't know braddah iz but in a way all us hawaii born islanders always seem to truly know braddah Iz, his music touched us all. to understand how huge Braddah Iz was he is still mourned and celebrated in hawaii and his music is still played constantly on the radio. The day of his birth and passing is celebrated like a national holiday. When you listen to any of the LATE and GREAT Israel Kamakwiwo'Ole's cds..you will hear one the most beauitful voices god ever put on this earth. But when you look at this man ,this giant man with this amazing angel like voice you will be blown away. god gave this late singer the voice of angel. a voice that must have been blessed and touched by god himself and it was...the songs , music and lyrics will leave you speechless and breathless ..Read more ›

I've read all these reviews(except for the latest) and they all seem to be people from the states dissing on the CD because the one song they know from is it "isn't the one in the toy commercial! " Well boo-hoo. Listen to the other tracks - IZ is the man.

If you are looking for ethereal melodies, "Kana'i Aupuni" is hauntingly beautiful. The version of "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" here isn't the one most are familiar with (it's found on the Meet Joe Black soundtrack and Iz's "Facing Fututure" album) but it's pretty groovy in its own right with its reggae inspiration. This is an early album, and it does suffer somewhat from overproduction, but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This album will most likely appeal more to people who are already fans of Iz than people who have never heard him before, but everyone should have one of his albums in their collection.

I purchased this CD after hearing IZ's version of Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World at the end of Meet Joe Black. I really enjoyed it. However, I should have bought the soundtrack because it is not the same version on this disc (Ka 'Ano'i). While not bad, it is not the same.
