5.0 out of 5 stars Will probably outlast the world., November 20, 2009

This review is from: Ka-Bar D2 Extreme Fighting/Utility Knife (Sports)
So after much deliberation I chose this knife for my primary tool knife. My first impression was of how light it was. This may or may not be a good thing depending on the application, but for someone who has to carry everything on his back, its perfect. Second, when trying to sharpen the d2 steel you immediately notice the difference from standard steel. Its like trying to sharpen ceramic...Its worth it in the end, but it takes a while. Over all I love this knife, but there are a few things that I would change if I could.

Balance: 10/10 -the balance point is about 1/2 inch from the hilt HANDLE side, not blade side
Edge: 8/10 -Hard to sharpen, but generally lasts pretty long
Black Blade Coating: 7/10 -holds up better than most, but you'll still get silver streaks after a few hard uses.
Sturdiness: 11/10 -look up some destruction tests. I've seen it HACK through a cinder block without breaking.

Cons

-Serrated edge is annoying and useless.
-leather sheath is difficult to use (buy the version with the plastic sheath)
-black coating wears off (to be expected, but i like my knives clean)

5.0 out of 5 stars exactly what I was looking for, February 2, 2010

I was looking for a fixed blade that I could keep in by bug-out bag and count on to take a beating and be dependable. Well, I haven't had the need to grab my bug-out bag and get outta dodge yet, but when the time comes, I am confident this blade with its d2 steel and subdued finish will serve me just as all my military brethren in the past. Fair price too.

good luck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Kabar, March 3, 2008
I purchased this for my son and he loves it so much. He tells me the blade is so durable he can cut anything. I highly recommend this item for outdoorsmen and I would pay the extra 30.00 for this model than any other. A+ 6stars

4.0 out of 5 stars one of the best survival knives, April 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Nice survival knife: specifically I like the one side blade design so I can split woods by hammering the back of the blade w/a piece of wood in the wild if needed. The sheath is very good but Kabar is designing a new one (expected to be seen by 2011) since they can not get the current ones anymore from the vendor...so get one while you still can! I store a swedish firesteel and some fishing gears in the sheath pouch, to make a complete survival knife set. The size, weight and quality is very impressively good.

The only reason I gave a 4 start instead of 5 is the exposed tang at the end of the handle. I don't think it does any good by designing that way, it looks ugly and may easly to break off or to get loose if I use it to hammer something really hard. Kabar engineers need to seal the tang with a steel cap or something alike.

Over all, it is a very good and an all-rounded survival knife w/me on all camping and wild hiking trips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great knife, January 13, 2011
This review is from: Ka-Bar D2 Extreme Fighting/Utility Knife (Sports)
Love the knife and it's one of Ka-Bar's best. But like others have said, get the version without the black painted blade and get it without serrations as they are unnecessary and hard to maintain. Also with shipping I would never pay more than $70. That's how much I got mine for shipped priority recently.

This is my favorite knife to go out and get wet since it's got the stainless steel edge. Then I have the all black one in kydex as well for night hunting and when I don't mind giving the blade a good cleaning when I come home.

Just don't get this version, I would look to other sources, for the silver blade with no serrations and the plastic/kydex sheath, and pay $65-75-ish.
