Marie McDonald has not only created a book of beauty, but it is useful as well. Her photographs of lei are outstanding, and she takes it to the next level with detailed instructions on how to make many of the lei. I enjoy looking at the beautiful lei and daydreaming of returning home someday to Hawai`i nei.

Marie McDonald's book, Ka Lei, is a significant addition to the effort attempting to preserve Hawaiiana. McDonald looks at this art form (she is comfortable using the plural, "leis," although others will say that is a nonsensical term, since there is no "s" in the Hawaiian language) through how lei were used in everyday life, both historically and in modern times. In addition to discussing flower and plant-based lei, she discusses lei made from other materials, such as pupu, shells, kukui nuts, and even ti leaves. She even acknowledges the assistance of Aunty Bea in inspiring her to develop this book.

You'll learn about lei, how lei are made, and how lei are used. This is a valuable reference.
