Superb music at a bargan price,

This review is from: Kabalevsky: Cello Concertos & Spring (Audio CD)
If you are unfamiliar with the music of Kabalevsky, this is a great place to start. Kabalevsky's music is very melodic and extremely accessable. He wrote at the same time as Prokofiev and Shostakovich and his music has the immediate appeal of all the other Russian masters of the late 19th and early to mid twentieth centuries. His Cello Concertos are especially wonderful - but as a starting point. Check out his Piano concertos and his Symphonies as well. This recording of the Cello Concertos is beautifully played by Alexander Rudin and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. Well worth a try.

FIRST RATE CELLO MUSIC,
This review is from: Kabalevsky: Cello Concertos & Spring (Audio CD)
These are fine accessible pieces, especially the First of 1949. I am smitten with the imploring second movement. It deserves to stand by itself as an encore piece for concert artists.I am just getting into the Second Concerto of 1964. I already know that the troubled first movement will become a favorite. If I didn't know who the composer was I might guess he was Jewish. There is a Jewish timbre throughout. The performances are first rate. For some really fine chamber music for cello, may I also suggest Leopold Mozart's pal Emanuel Siprutini?
