I am writing a review of three toilet cleaning systems I've bought here on amazon:

Fluidmaster:
Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based tablet.
Cartridge is not meant to be refilled.
Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom.
Cartridge can be modified (I used a dremel) so it is easily refilled.

NeverScrub:
Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based crystal.
Cartridge is not meant to be refilled.
Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom.

Kaboom:
Does not use a cartridge. Bromine tablet refill inserts directly by unscrewing a cap.
No odor noticeable in the bathroom.

All three of these systems work the same way and all are really easy to install. All of them put a toilet cleaning chemical (tablets or crystals) in-line between the water fill valve and the toilet bowl fill pipe. All of them prevent the chemical from getting into the tank water (so there is no damage to the plastic parts in the tank). All sell refills for their systems. All keep the toilet bowl equally clean for about 1-3 months depending on how often it is flushed.

Amazon also sells Pool/Spa Cleaning Chlorine and Bromine tablets, which as far as I can tell do just as good a job keeping the toilets clean as the refills but at a fraction of the cost.

Tried to demonstrate how easy it is to install one of these as well as show people what it looks like and what is included in with the product.

I know when I first purchased this I wasn't sure what to expect, this should make it clear!

Please note: 2 tablets are included as well as 1 spare short tube (not shown).

Sorry my toilet tank was so dirty, I wanted to show a fresh install. That toilet has been sitting for about 2 months unused and is about 5 years old overall. Getting the old refill tube from your toilet to fit onto the nozzle of the tablet reservoir can be tricky if the old tube is very stiff. It took me about 20 seconds or so after the video which I didn't want to include due to time restraints, as I wasn't sure how much time I had before I exceeded the 100mb file size limit. This was my first video review and I hope to include many more as I get better at it! Enjoy and please ask any questions you may have.

I'd recommend buying pool bromine tablets because the kaboom ones are very pricey.

Some of the reviewers reference another product they say is better, but i have never heard of or used the other product. I bought one of these as I saw some ads for it and I had water stain problems in the toilet bowl.

I could start to see and immediate change as the acid/bleach starting eating through the stains and then they were all gone, and stayed gone until a refill was needed and then I noticed the stains coming back.

Despite what others have said, I have never seen a toilet it wouldn't work in as they are almost all made the same. The toilets are made to run some water from around the rim to rinse the sides. Perhaps the holes the water is supposed to come through are clogged so you don't get an even distribution of the bleach around the bowl.

I just bought my first refill. When I looked at the tablets they have you refill with, they looked just like the bromide tablets in my hot tub. Rather than spending $6 for two refills (two tablets each), I am going to try my spa tablets next time which are way cheaper.

If you have a "normal" toliet, and if the toilet is working properly (water coming down all around the rim), this product WILL do the job it claims.

If you have a really badly stained toilet to begin with, I came up with a way to get a clean bowl to start with. I turned off the water supply, flushed the toilet to empty the water in the bowl. Then I jammed plastic bags into the hole to block it. Then I dumped a gallon of the cheapest vinegar I could find and let it sit overnight. The next day all the old hard water stains were gone and I had a "fresh" toilet to start with.

I purchased the product based on Amnia's summary review of similar products. His/her review was very informative. But, doesn't discuss the old verses new design of the Kaboom units. The older units are bright purple, like you see in the Billy Mays commercials. Shaped like a T, with the horizontal tube that the primary flow goes, and short T to the screw top lid. Some people complained that their units exploded and flooded the bathroom. Not sure why it would flood the bathroom if it exploded though. But, how I surmise they exploded was maybe a chunk of the tablet got stuck in the tube, plugging it, and pressurizing the unit and it couldn't take it. That still shouldn't cause a flood though.

But, now there are new units. These new units previously were sold under the Puricle name. It seems Kaboom bought Puricle and decided to sell the Puricle design instead of their own previous design. The new design has a check valve on the side. I guess this is to help prevent the problem with it pressurizing. But the check valve is garbage and leaks. And the screw top lid seal isn't good and it leaks. So, the upshot is, during a flush fill, water leaks out of the unit. The entire purpose of having the unit is to prevent the chlorine from getting in the tank! Thus it fails to do what it is supposed to do.

Someone else said that they have used Teflon tape to prevent the leaks at least on the cap. I haven't tried that, but, is it really worth the trouble?

The new design also has cartridges. Though, I'm not sure if you really need to even use them. I think you can just put the chlorine or bromine tablets directly in the unit without the cartridge. But, that might impact the proper functioning of the check valve.
