This review is from: The Kachina Dolls of Cecil Calnimptewa: Their Power Their Splendor (Hardcover)
The name Cecil Calnimptewa means prize-winning kachina dolls. This limited edition (limited to 1500 copies) publication does not disappoint the reader or collector of Hopi katsina. While Ms Bassman's information is well done and presents a great deal of information on Mr Calnimptewa, his home and family ... it is the outstanding photography of Gene Balzer which "makes" the book. Especially interesting is the section (ppg 46-63) devoted to "Yesterday and Today", a comparison of Mr Calnimptewa's work from 25 years ago with the detailed all-wood carvings of the past decade. On page 5, the reader traces the evolution of a kachina doll from the selection of the cottonwood root, to rough-cut, finer detail and painting ... ultimately to the completed subject. The book is an expensive one ($70) but worth the investment to a collector like myself who cannot afford the actual katsina by this carver, which sell for a minimum of $5,000. You will enjoy this book!!
