2.0 out of 5 stars YUKI IMPROVES A BIT, December 8, 2006
This review is from: Kagetora 3 (Paperback)
Kagetora is still finding it hard to seperate his love for Yuki from the loyalty he has for the Toudou family and his duty to train her in martial arts. Amazingly, she begins to show some improvement when she feels that Kagetora is going to be fired for lack of progress. Yuki's own emotions come to the forefront when a rich girl straight out of Ai Yori Aoshi named Satsuki Reizeiin transfers to their school because she's in love with Kagetora. She wants to capture his heart whether by hook or crook (even if it takes a tranquilizer dart). Things get even worse when Kagetora's other female ninja friend, Sayuka, shows up. Sayuka still thinks that she is Kagetora's destined wife and fiance, even though he only regards her as a friend. Let the hijinks ensue!

This story is getting old. The introduction of Satsuki, the rich girl stereotype, does nothing to help the book, and instead brings the quality down a notch. It just seems like such a deliberate plot complication that has nothing to do with deepening any of the characters and ends up being a convention we've already seen in too many manga. After a stronger showing in Volume 2, Yuki is back to being a retarded nitwit that couldn't think her way out of a paperbag. Segami's art leaves a little to be desired also. His characters lack any distinctive design who seem like bald heads with hairdos dropped like ice cream on their heads and left to shape themselves. It just doesn't seem like much thought went into this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another rival for Kagetora's affections..., October 16, 2006
This review is from: Kagetora 3 (Paperback)
...plops herself down on his lap. Will his forbidden love for his hime (princess/lady), Yuki, be enough to maintain his duty as well as his virtue? Not to mention the fact that Sakuya is back in town (she's been gone, what, three chapters? Phew... what a long seperation).

In addition, a few location changes are made... there's a trip to an indoor pool which is quickly followed up with a semi-romantic trip to an amusement park for Yuki and Kagetora. A kendo training camp causes friction between the two as Yuki trains so she's not a burden to Kagetora, while he thinks she's mad at him for failing his duty.

More average characterization and plot is had as with the previous two volumes. I think the problem with this series is in it's implimentation, as many series cover the exact same ground as it (rich girls, childhood promise girls, forbidden master/servant relationships), but do so in ways much better than Segami does here.

The art is the same average fair it was in volume two (which was a step down from volume one) with the same lack of distinciveness pawned off on the side characters.

Check it out if at your local bookstore before buying, if it all. Otherwise, I'd recommend you concentrate on other titles if you want over the top, comedic action (Sgt.Frog, maybe) or "will they/won't they" shonen rom/com (I'd say Pastel).
