I spent a long time with Papa David Bray in 1964. After high school in California, I moved to the islands. I was there when he was entertaining some of the cast and crew of the movie "In Harm's Way" that was being filmed there that summer. I have a large chapter devoted to that experience in my own book "A Spiritual Warrior's Journey" which will shed some additional light on the man himself. He was not a saint or even a sage - but he certainly was a very powerful and great Kahuna. He had many flaws - as he was very human. But he was also superhuman in mystical ways.

As a side note - he was in the 1951 movie with Jeff Chander called "Bird of Paradise" were he played a kuhuna - believe it or not.

He died in 1968 but there still remains great interest in his life. I get people from Eurpoe and North America contacting me about him even all these years later. The book is much too short - it does not capture all he had to offer others. The book is more of a short outline of the things that he could and did go into much deeper details with in person. You may pick some things up of interest; but a reader is not that same as someone who can sit and ask questions of Papa - it will be a very light introduction to who and what his teachings are really about.

He wrote many history books about the islands but I do not know if any of those are available any more except in dusty old library storage rooms in Hawaii.

Douglas Low tried to save what knowledge he could - if not for this thin booklet there would be nothing except Papa Bray's large shadow. That would be a shame. So, this 54 page book is all that remains of a teacher who had much to give the world. The book will wet your interest but it is not enough to give you what you are seeking if you are truly on a quest.

THIS BOOK IS SHORT BUT SWEET. IT IS HISTORICAL AND PRICELESS IN MY OPINION SINCE A TRUE KAHUNA WROTE IT. KAHUNA BRAY'S PHILOSOPHY IS OUTLINED BY LOW. IN MY EXTENSIVE READING ON RELIABLE SOURCES OF KAHUNAISM (NANA I KE KUMU,MALO, I'I, KAMAKAU, KUPIHEA, MELVILLE,JOURNALS,ETC), THIS BOOK FILLS IN MANY GAPS AND IS A GREAT ADDITION TO ONE'S KNOWLEDGE ON HAWAIIAN CULTURE AND KAHUNAISM. I AM A NATIVE HAWAIIAN PHYSICIAN PUBLISHED ON TRADITIONAL HAWAIIAN MEDICINE AND CONSIDER THIS BOOK A KEEPER.

This volume is only 59 pages in length, and does not contain nearly enough information about what the kahunas believed and practised.
