4.0 out of 5 stars A Very good emergency tool
I bought the Kaito KA888 radio a couple of weeks ago for
shortwave and in case of an emergency. It is a real nice
radio for emergencys with its features, the compass, time,
temperture, and a perfect bright light during night or
black outs. The radio is pretty good and smooth. The KA888

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointing
ordered the Kaito KA888 emergency radio for a present. It worked for exactly one day, then the AC adaptor died, making it impossible to use the radio on current or recharge it. Then the solar function stopped a few days later.
I have been in contact with the company and am returning it for a replacement, as that first day was wonderful.
I'll let you know if...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very good emergency tool, September 24, 2005
This review is from: Kaito KA888 4-way Powered Emergency Radio (Electronics)
I bought the Kaito KA888 radio a couple of weeks ago for
shortwave and in case of an emergency. It is a real nice
radio for emergencys with its features, the compass, time,
temperture, and a perfect bright light during night or
black outs. The radio is pretty good and smooth. The KA888
has AM,FM and shortwave (4bands) with quality sound on FM
AM. The shortwave is ok and not the most clearest, but this
specialliaces on being for emergencys.Which its very good
for that.I kept the radio for about a week and returned it
for the KA077 emergency radio because it covered more bands
like VHF,TV,and weather bands. For me I liked this one better
for my interest and needs.I would say that both radios are
nice.It just depends what you need and want. The KA888and
KA077 are good quality radios for a good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Life Saver, December 9, 2008
This review is from: Kaito KA888 4-way Powered Emergency Radio (Electronics)
This little jewel will not only entertain you with your favorite radio station, it will also give you rather decent light and will sound a very loud alarm so that you can be rescued. It will also tell you the ambient temperature and will even tell you the time.

No, it is not a high tech digital radio that can scan the tropics of radio transmissions and provide incredible reception, but it really does the job it was designed to do. It will light your way. It will connect you with world band radio. It will scream a loud siren to help you be found among the rubble that once was your home. It will comfort you. And, if you haven't even given it alkaline batteries, all you have to do is turn the crank. Miracle of miracles, this little radio will love you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough Windup!, April 12, 2010

Every thing works well on this item except the winding of the magneto. It is hard to turn and must be turned rapidly to generate enough energy to operate the unit. The good part is with a storage battery built in and the common battery cells, you will probably never need to wind it.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK... The second time, March 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kaito KA888 4-way Powered Emergency Radio (Electronics)
When I first received this item, the solar panel did not work, on account of the fact that the switch would not turn to the solar option. After a while, the internal batteries died and would not retain a charge. It was returned to the retailer, and we received a new one, which works OK... Extra emphasis on "OK". Everything works on this one, except that the radio seems to be permanently set on it's loudest setting. I have to plug the earbuds in to "turn it down." Also, the clock is extremely hard to set, and the instructions are written very badly. So, you run your chances getting this... If it works, great, if it doesn't...
On the good note, the compass is handy, although small, and the temperature gauge is nice, the design is ergonomic, and the strap is nice.

1.0 out of 5 stars KA888 is NOT a SOLAR radio, January 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Kaito KA888 4-way Powered Emergency Radio (Electronics)
I bought this radio based on the positive reviews on Amazon. This is NOT a SOLAR radio. i have left the radio out in the Arizona sunshine for 3 days straight, and the solar cells do not charge anything.
the radio works only in direct bright sunshine or with the provided plug in power adapter. no wonder the radio has 4 different powering options, since the solar one is a sham

i wonder who writes these positive reviews about the functionality, when the main reason for being for this radio is that it has a solar power source, good for use for camping and emergencies??

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete piece of crap, March 22, 2007

This review is from: Kaito KA888 4-way Powered Emergency Radio (Electronics)
Flashlight went out with two brief usages; now the whole thing has given up the ghost. Also: only received one SW station (even with "two" bands), and a handful of AM/FM. Also: solar recharger never worked--or maybe it would have, but the instructions didn't even include a how-to section on "solar".

If you feel like wasting your money on something that doesn't deliver much and is completely worn off after a brief period of time, buy a bottle of cheap booze instead of this garbage.

1.0 out of 5 stars Guess it's crap shoot with this radio, July 31, 2010
This review is from: Kaito KA888 4-way Powered Emergency Radio (Electronics)
Took a chance on this product despite mixed reviews and got a defective item. The internal battery would not charge despite following directions perfectly. Also the covering on the solar panels was all wadded up. Cheap materials and is akward to crank. Steer clear of this radio.
