Product Description

The Kala Satin Mahogany Tenor Ukulele offers a full-bodied tone with plenty of "sweet highs" and "mellow lows" that combine for a full rich sound. Traditional white binding on the top and the back accent the satin finish, while chrome die-cast tuners assure your instrument will stay in tune.

The tenor size is a good bet for guitarists like me -- longer scale, same tuning as the smaller soprano and concert, with the option to use the "low-G" tuning (requires a special set of strings, or the replacement of the high 4th with a light-tension classical guitar 4th string). This Kala uke is well-made of laminated wood. The action is high, but can be lowered by shaving the bridge saddle and very carefully filing the nut slots. Have a local luthier do it for you if you are unsure of the procedure. The tone is just fine, a bit deeper and fuller than the tiny soprano uke that most people think of when they think of the instrument. Surface finish is matte. All in all, this is a good serviceable uke.

I actually purchased my Kala at a flea market in Honolulu, not through Amazon. I picked it up because I wanted to learn how to play on a larger tenor uke (I'm a guitarist).

I'm strictly a hobbyist, so I don't require a huge amount from my instruments, but I've learned a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of this particular uke over the last 5 years of use.

Pros: Good sound, fantastic value, nice appearance, light and durable, easy to play

Cons: No pickup, some intonation problems

For the price, I absolutely love the instrument. It's laminated wood, but possesses a sweet timbre nonetheless. I've played it next to solid-wood ukes priced in the $300-$400 range and I much preferred the mellowness of the Kala. For full disclosure, some good strings are probably to credit as well. I recommend Aquila strings very highly.

As I've progressed in my uke-playing, I've noticed a couple of shortcomings, though. The highs lack some of the "crisp" quality that the more-expensive instruments have, giving the Kala a sort of "plink-y" sound. The intonation is also a little off. When I move up to the 8th or 9th fret, the notes are noticeably sharp.

The lack of a pick-up is more of a nuisance than an actual problem. I've done some shows and recordings with my Kala, and having to mic up the instrument adds a little bit of hassle. If you're frequently amplifying your music, just keep it in mind.

It's not my intention to make this into a shameless self-promotion, but you can hear a studio-recording of the Kala here: https://soundcloud.com/casey-harwood/dear-heart-rough-cut

It's very lightweight and rugged as all get-out.

I am very happy with this ukulele. It looks and sounds very good. It came with good quality strings and was set up well. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good ukulele on a budget.

Don't worry about the photo. The photo shows the wood being more red than it really is. I am happy this is the case.
