I actually purchased my Kala at a flea market in Honolulu, not through Amazon. I picked it up because I wanted to learn how to play on a larger tenor uke (I'm a guitarist).

I'm strictly a hobbyist, so I don't require a huge amount from my instruments, but I've learned a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of this particular uke over the last 5 years of use.

Pros: Good sound, fantastic value, nice appearance, light and durable, easy to play

Cons: No pickup, some intonation problems

For the price, I absolutely love the instrument. It's laminated wood, but possesses a sweet timbre nonetheless. I've played it next to solid-wood ukes priced in the $300-$400 range and I much preferred the mellowness of the Kala. For full disclosure, some good strings are probably to credit as well. I recommend Aquila strings very highly.

As I've progressed in my uke-playing, I've noticed a couple of shortcomings, though. The highs lack some of the "crisp" quality that the more-expensive instruments have, giving the Kala a sort of "plink-y" sound. The intonation is also a little off. When I move up to the 8th or 9th fret, the notes are noticeably sharp.

The lack of a pick-up is more of a nuisance than an actual problem. I've done some shows and recordings with my Kala, and having to mic up the instrument adds a little bit of hassle. If you're frequently amplifying your music, just keep it in mind.

It's not my intention to make this into a shameless self-promotion, but you can hear a studio-recording of the Kala here: https://soundcloud.com/casey-harwood/dear-heart-rough-cut

It's very lightweight and rugged as all get-out.

The tenor size is a good bet for guitarists like me -- longer scale, same tuning as the smaller soprano and concert, with the option to use the "low-G" tuning (requires a special set of strings, or the replacement of the high 4th with a light-tension classical guitar 4th string). This Kala uke is well-made of laminated wood. The action is high, but can be lowered by shaving the bridge saddle and very carefully filing the nut slots. Have a local luthier do it for you if you are unsure of the procedure. The tone is just fine, a bit deeper and fuller than the tiny soprano uke that most people think of when they think of the instrument. Surface finish is matte. All in all, this is a good serviceable uke.

I am very happy with this ukulele. It looks and sounds very good. It came with good quality strings and was set up well. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good ukulele on a budget.

Don't worry about the photo. The photo shows the wood being more red than it really is. I am happy this is the case.

I became interested in ukes a few years back and got a cheap-o $35 Mahalo ukulele, which I played on a regular basis. I finally decided it was time for an upgrade, and spent a couple hours plinking around on ukes to get an idea of what I wanted. I ended up buying this ukulele on the spot! Keep in mind this review is mostly comparing it to the toy-like uke I learned on.

PROS: This ukulele has a very loud and clear sound (which is partially because it is a tenor and not a soprano/concert). It has a soft and mellow undertone, but crisp overtones that make it sound very full. The strings stay in tune very well, and have a great sound (if desired you can always upgrade the strings, but I personally think the strings that come with it sound beautiful). The mahogany makes the ukulele feel really nice, and make it fun to hold!

CONS: Obviously no pick up. The uke has a matte finish (I personally like it, but I know some people prefer a glossy look). Also, the back piece of the ukulele is pieced together with a very insignificant seam down the middle. They did an amazing job at getting it to blend in with the grain of the wood, but I know some people dislike seams as they may be weaker and break more easily at that point. But the ukulele is sturdily built, so it shouldn't be a problem. And that's about it!

Overall, this ukulele is absolutely gorgeous. I compared this to some of the other ukuleles in the store, pricing up into $300, and I still preferred the sound of this one. In fact, I even brought a friend in with me and had her close her eyes while I played between this and the most expensive tenor ukulele they had, and she preferred the sound of this one. It's pretty fantastimical.

I did a lot of research before getting this one for my daughter's birthday. This is the 1st ukulele in our house, and I'm very happy about this one. Reasonable price for an instrument with beautiful sound. Now we've had it for almost 2 years. Both my daughter and I love the sound and would play it from time to time and still keeping a good interest in it. Now I'm moving on to my next ukulele, which is also a KALA. We highly recommend this one as a beginner's choice.
