For the price, and the looks, this ukulele delivers 100%. It's beautiful, it sounds great- mine has never once had any tuning problems or fretboard problems, and it's an overall great, great ukulele for beginners. I've had mine for a year and a half and still love it.

I bought 12 of these ukuleles for my high school program. They are excellent Ukuleles for beginners on a budget. They hold their tune well, and are pretty sturdy. These do not have friction tuners, which is a plus! My only recommendation is that you purchase Aquila strings for them. The black strings are ok, but they are not as resonant as when you place Aquilas on them :)

I am new to ukulele, and I researched them thoroughly. This one had consistently good reviews, and it did not disappoint me. It has a very sweet sound, and the strings it came with were not too "bright". It holds its tuning wonderfully, and is a joy to play. I would not hesitate to recommend this little gem to anyone looking to spend under $50. I am really enjoying it.

I bought this a couple months ago, it's really great, i would recomend getting it. I've played a lot of professional ukuleles and this one compares well especially for the price. People keep writing reviews saying it goes out of tune to quickly, that's not true... at all. Any strings, especially nylon stings, have to stretch out when they are first being used, so yes, it goes out of tune within a couple seconds when you first pick it up, but that's how it is with any string instrument, there is an easy process for stretching the strings, i think the last time i tuned it was two weeks ago and its still in tune, so its not a problem. Also, of course it is shipped out of tune, common people. The neck is surprisingly sturdy, even more so then alot of expensive ones i've played. Going back to the tuning the pegs and gears are really great, they don't slip at all, it really can play in tune for a long time. Also build quality of the body is really good, the bridge is sturdy, its not easy to break (believe me) and the acoustics of the body are great. The action on the strings is perfect and the frets are perfect, sadly some cheaper fretted instruments have lop sided frets that just create uneven tones but that isn't the case with this ukulele. Ive actually recorded and preformed with this ukulele and its great, i couldn't find something to complain about with this thing, and i'm pretty good at that.

Been playing this for about a month. I bought it to learn on, and plan to get a concert or tenor later. Unlike the Kalas, it does not come with Aquila strings. Out of the box the strings will be very loose, and it will take a lot of turns to get them in tune. I assume they do this to prevent the tension from warping the neck during shipping. It took about two weeks of daily playing before the strings started to stay in tune. I used the 'pencil trick' and rubbed pencil lead (graphite) into the notches of the nut, and it made precise tuning noticeably easier. I highly recommend getting a clip on tuner. You'll need it, even with Aquilas. I also recommend getting a gig bag if you plan on taking it places. Kala makes two nice ones. If you're used to the tone of $200 solid wood ukes (like keiffer671), you might be disappointed, however, if you're a beginner you'll probably like the tone. Overall, this is a nice well made uke with good tone. You'll want better strings, and solid wood bodies will beckon (Makalas are laminated), but it's a good starter uke, and at the price it's an excellent buy.

I purchased my Makala last December from my trusted local music store Groth Music, after doing some online research. I had always loved my sister's baritone ukulele, (also a Makala) and wanted one of my own. I am very glad I purchased this instrument! It has a bright bouncy tone, (with the right strings) and stays in tune very well; for the price, the gear tuners are extraordinary.

Now let's get to the less fine points, and there are two of them. First, and perhaps most importantly, this is a composite wood ukulele. To those of you who don't know what that is, it's wood fibers that have been pressed into a shape, versus a slab of wood being carved into the shape. I haven't had any problems with the body of my ukulele, but I don't especially like it, and it's a bit too soft for comfort. I feel like I could snap it if I hold it too tightly or strum it too hard. As I said before, for the price it is very good, but I don't think they constructed it with longevity in mind.

Second, the strings that come on the ukulele are rubbish. They don't stay in tune well, and they are twangy and have an unpleasant sound. When I purchased the instrument, I bought a set of Aquila strings to go with it, and I'm glad I did, and I highly recommend them. They are only $7.50 or so in a music shop, and they're worth every penny. I had an incident, where I mistakenly tuned the C string a whole step sharp, so now it's flat by a half step every time I pull it out and need to tune it, so I'd recommend buying a good tuner as well. Oh, and also a case, as the Makala ukulele comes in a cardboard box.

So there's my 2 cents. I whole-heartedly recommend it to musical enthusiasts or hobbyists (such as myself) or even for children. (As it's inexpensive, and high quality.)
