Book Description

March 5, 2003
Since the arrival of its first settler in 1829, the story of Kalamazoo has been an interesting one. Out of the southwest Michigan wilderness, a small 19th century village quickly blossomed into a 20th century city. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a wide variety of industries made Kalamazoo a boomtown. Everything from paper, corsets, taxicabs, and pharmaceuticals allowed Kalamazoo to develop into a major center of manufacturing. At the same time, several colleges that would establish the area as a center for education were organized and expanded. Fortunately, much of Kalamazoo‚Â's development has been well-documented through photographs and other visual illustrations. These images are the subjects of this

volume, which is organized to show the varied elements of Kalamazoo‚Â's history. Gathered from local archives and private collections, most of these rare photographs have never before been published.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, great little city!, November 30, 2008

This review is from: Kalamazoo Michigan (MI) (Images of America) (Paperback)
"Images of America: Kalamazoo, Michigan" captures in photos much of the city's historically significant architecture, past and present. Unfortunately, Kalamazoo, like many American cities has lost many of its historic places, but those that remain represent some of the finest architecture of their respective styles. One particular point of interest is the State Psychiatric Hospital. The original structures designed for that campus were truly captivating. Unfortunately, very few of the original structures remain. The book also highlights the original campus of Western Michigan University (WMU). The grounds of the original WMU campus were designed by the Olmsted Brothers, a landscape design firm, which also designed Central Park in New York City. If you've never been to Kalamazoo, it is a charming small city half way between Detroit and Chicago, with gothic style churches and art deco style public buildings surrounding Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo. There's also wonderful architecture in and around Kalamazoo College. This book also serves as a barometer of the community's efforts at protecting and preserving its history.
