Get to Know A Great Contemporary Composer, August 21, 2004

Kalevi Aho's music is reasonably accessible and highly rewarding once you make the effort. The Symphonic Dances were meant to complete a work begun by Uuno Klami, but grew into something bigger. The Symphony No. 11 is wonderful but the "Dances" blew me away. The Lahti Symphony Orchestra musicians obviously have this music in their blood and give committed performances. The BIS engineeers are the best in the business. Here, they are in top form. I am a Jazz and Classical Music DJ on KSFR, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and look forward to introducing my audience to the music of Aho.
