This review is from: Kamandi at Earth's end (Elseworlds)
This is a modified retelling of the excellent and quirky 70's comic "Kamandi: Last Boy on Earth"- originally done by the late, great Jack Kirby.
In this six issue limited series Kamandi is still one of the few survivors of a world-wide apocalyspe that destroyed human civilization. However, here, instead of being raised by his grandfather he is raised by "Mother"- the global computer system that anihilated most of the human race 50 years before. Mother has raised the young Kamandi for one purpose, to destroy the threat that almost stopped and destroyed her all those years ago- Superman.
You see, this is really more Superman story than it is about the old series, but it is a great Superman story. There is something haunting and powerful about The Man of Tomorrow living out his twilight years on a destroyed earth where grief, age, and lack of solar energy have weakened him and his memory. With his long white beard and hair he looks like the Ancient of Days from William Blake's work. His awakening to avenge, and rebuild, the world that he was sworn to protect is the stuff of myth.
