Expecting a formulaic martial arts Manga, I was pleasantly surprised this was different enough to make it seem fresh. How? Well, it has a very strong female general who cares about people and makes ethical and honorable decisions without appearing weak and vulnerable. Her soldiers and samurai admire her and it come across as justifiable. Add to this an honorable mystery man with a sentient mask (yes, a sentient mask that talks to him and provides him immense power) and a world where gifted samurais wield a magical fighting power called Nen and you have a pretty darn good story.

The art was spot on briskly moving the plot making this an enjoyable and easy read. For those new to Manga, please remember to read from right to left. I highly recommend this series and look forward to reading future volumes.

I primarily review graphic novels and my rating system is simple. 5 stars for books that I couldn't put down and read from start to finish in one sitting. 4 stars for excellent books that I highly recommend and will continue reading myself. 3 stars for books I liked and may recommend. 2 stars and below for books I would not recommend.

I had read the Gen books on my kindle up to the seventh book and was quite disappointed that I couldn't read the rest of them. The reason? The stories and this one is one of them.
Kamen is a wonderful book about a masked man who wakes up in the middle of a field with no memory of the past. All that he has is this female voice talking to him through a mask. When he is captured by the General Simba and taken to her fort where he fights many men in order to protect young girl while being guided by the voice. He is declared the reincarnation of Shisa.
Simba stops the fight, orders the prisoners be set free, and sends her uncle away. There is an even greater threat at hand to worry about: the Zo army.
The battle begins and Simba appears to have the upperhand even with her small number of warriors but will it stay that way?
Will the masked man fight? And for whose side? If he does help, how does he plan to defeat the Zo army or Simba's if he will not kill? What will happen to Simba? What will happen to tbe little girl and who is she?
I'm dying of suspense and cannot wait for the continuation of Kamen!!
