Product Description

Product Description: The new VF-4 LCD View Finder is used to magnify the image on your Live View LCD to achieve more accurate focus, color, and exposure especially when operating under bright outdoor lighting. When using our VF-4 view finder the large eye-cup will instantly add stability to hand held video shots. (eyecup can be used for left or right eye). Tired of other viewfinders that fall off from magnetic sticky lcd or snapping frames? The VF-4 LCD Viewfinder attaches to your DSLR camera through a solid metal Quick Release baseplate designed with a non-slip, rubberized platform. You can lock the VF-4 in place when in use, or quickly unlock the VF-4 when not in use. Our quick release baseplate is specially designed to mount directly to Arca Swiss compatible ball heads. Or use any of the 1/4-20 threaded areas to mount your own quick release plates. The brackets on the VF-4 have been re-positioned further from the camera body allowing for better access to your buttons and dials over the previous VF-3 ViewFinder. With its extensive forward, back, horizontal, and vertical adjustments the Carry Speed VF-4 LCD Viewfinder has been designed to fit a variety of cameras from small to large. Carry Speed's 3x magnifying loupe uses high-quality glass optics with a built in diopter to adjust screen focus for those with less than perfect vision. When not in use, the entire loupe can be used as a normal sunshade or detached completely using the baseplate quick release system. The optional Extension Bracket (included in this bundle listing) is available to extend the range of the Carry Speed VF-4 LCD View Finder to fit taller cameras or DSLR camera bodies with an added battery grip. The bracket adds an additional 1.3" (33mm) of height adjustment.Package Includes: (1) Carry Speed LCD ViewFinder VF-4 w/ standard Bracket ($180 dollar value) (1) VF-4 Extension Bracket ($25 dollar Value) (1) Quick Release Baseplate (1) Hex Key

It still stays vertical however... Overall its a good product.

Those holes look to fit the standard tripod head mounting plate screw (I use Manfrotto) but they do not fit.

The viewfinder was loose enough to slide out but now it will not tighten back due to the jammed screw.

Almost all the other viewfinder magnifiers out there are primarily for Canon and have fit issues on a Nikon. I saw this Carry Speed VF-4 at NAB 2013 on the last day, but they were sold out. They are finally restocked and offered a $50 coupon promotion.

My VF-4 arrived yesterday via registered US mail. I had to sign for it. I was glad I was home or I'd have had to stand in line at the post office which, believe me, is not pleasant.

The VF-4 is exactly what I hoped it to be.

- adjustable -- the mounting brackets allow precise positioning for the D800, but also for a variety of other cameras. Brackets allow a broad range of left/right and up/down adjustment, then can be locked very securely in place with Allen head screws (Allen wrench is supplied.)
- sized right -- you can see the entire D800 LCD screen, yet still easily reach all the control buttons on the camera back
- built-in diopter adjustment and good optics -- the screen is sharp corner to corner
- comfortable, durable eyecup -- the eyepiece becomes an extension of the camera. (See attach user photo.) When you hold it against your face, the camera becomes much more steady, allowing much better handheld video shots.
- built-in eyepiece shutter -- if you inadvertently let the sun shine into the finder, be aware that by design you have a magnifier focusing that sunlight onto the surface of your LCD screen. It can burn a hole in the LCD like a kid burning ants with a magnifying glass on a sunny day. Get in the habit of closing its shutter or flipping it up if you're outside.
- flip-up hinge allows quick direct viewing if desired. In this mode it becomes a sun hood that should allow better viewing in bright sun.

The VF-4 LCD viewfinder is just what I needed for my Nikon D7100. It fits very well and makes shooting video in daylight situations a breeze, however the baseplate has a MAJOR FLAW. As I loosened the red set screw which appears to be aluminum or similar lightweight metal it became jammed in the baseplate as if it were cross threaded. The viewfinder was loose enough to slide out but now it will not tighten back due to the jammed screw. The only possible fix, other than a new one, would be to drill out the existing set screw and rethread the hole. Not what I expected or wanted to do. Since their web site is currently down, I have no way to contact them for a replacement base as mine should still be under warranty. I understand things happen but this is a huge inconvenience.

First off I bought mine direct from PNC because Amazon US would not ship to the UK and Amazon UK did not stock. No matter, price slightly better than Amazon price at time of writing.

I bought this for use on a full spectrum converted Nikon D800 that spends most of its time in Live View because of the use of visually opaque filters on the lens. What I liked in the spec was the quality of the viewing lens, the accommodation of a full 3.2" display and an extended mounting that was compatible with battery packs. I also liked the idea that the mounting plate itself is compatible with the Arca-Swiss system.

Within minutes of receiving the system I realised there are a few limitations. These are not show stoppers, but if you are looking to use equipment to the maximum potential then these are shortfalls that hopefully PNC will fix in due course.

First off, in terms of gripes, is that the mounting plate has a rubber top. This kind of misses the point of the Arca-Swiss system where the best mass coupling is achieved by metal to metal contact. Okay, tear of rubber panel and carry on, but this leaves only a thin rim around the top of the plate - not good.

Second, more serious for me, is that I leave RRS L-brackets on my D800s. I wanted to mate this system underneath the L-brackets. Well I can, and the vertical L-bracket dovetail is still useable. The VF-4 plate, sans rubber, goes on under the L-bracket horizontal dovetail. The viewfinder then mounts perfectly in terms of location. However, the supplementary AS dovetail on the VF-4 mounting plate is too close to the base screws on viewfinder bracket to get into Kirk or RRS clamps = operational FAIL!! This much touted feature is 100% useless unless you remove the Viewfinder from the mounting plate.

I am not sure what I am getting: I ordered it from MogoPod, the viewfinder piece is branded PNC, the eye cup and the instruction card is branded by CarrySpeed. My first reaction was: did MogoPod just put all the spare or leftover pieces from different brands together. I acutally contacted MogoPod about the brands of this view finder they carry before I decided to make the purchase. They responded that CarrySpeed was a different company and the one they carried was PNC brand. When I searched CarrySpeed website and I was redirected to MogoPod. My problem: I feel I got a product that was put together by leftover pieces.

Second problem I have: the mounting plate has six screw holes on the bottom side and all same size. Those holes look to fit the standard tripod head mounting plate screw (I use Manfrotto) but they do not fit. What's the point of having so many screw holes that do not work with the standard mounting screw? Now I cannot mount the camera together with this plate on my tripod head.

Third problem: the diopter does not focus anything. Other words, it is there for no thing. I still have to rely on the live view magnification to focus the lens.

Good things? Yeah, there are some. The plastic and aluminum material feel cheap but light weight (but this makes me also wondering if the glass is a real glass and how thick). In addition, the view finder makes the LCD image look very bright and vivid, sort of 3D feel. Moreover, the bracket is fully adjustable and fits perfectly on the LCD screen and all camera buttons on the back are accessible. Last but not the least, it helps to stabilize the camera from body vibration quite good.
