Editorial Reviews

DJAMRA is a current Japanese band, coming from Osaka. The quintet is composed by a rhythmic section, a saxophone player and a trumpet player. The trio also uses many guests, according to its needs. Its music is a blend of jazz, jazz-rock, Progressive rock and avant-garde music. It seems that none of these aspects have been forgotten, be it conventional or much more experimental. Bassist Masaharu MAKAKITA appears as a real virtuoso, in the true sense of the term. His powerful and ever-present sound really leads the band. Slaps or fretless bass are regularly part of the show, too. After a remarkable mini-CD, comes the time of the first album. What is often regarded as a perilous exercise becomes here a real achievement ! ""Transplantation"" (2003) alternates between traditional sequences and controlled crazy jams, the whole included in concise tracks. Three years later, DJAMRA is back with a new line-up. Guitar makes its entry with much noise, and its devastating riffs now take the lion's share with the bass parts, still as voluble as before, and an even more striking saxophone. The ten tracks of ""Kamihitoe"" (2006) are still as original and iconoclast, full of really unique energy and freshness. This is no easy-listening music, and it might well scare those who believed that ""Transplantation"" had reached the end of where boiling sonic experimentation could lead to. Conversely, it will delight undoubtedly the open-minded and adrenalin-addicted ones. Now you choose what your side is...
