Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Seven years have passed since Twista's last solo joint (1997's hood classic, Adrenaline Rush), and that's about three career cycles' worth of evolution in the swiftly moving world of hip-hop. The Chicago speed rapper's managed to do well for himself in the interim, retaining a strong following among the thug-life set and accruing new listeners via judicious appearances on splashy commercial releases like Ludacris's Word of Mouf. The long-delayed Kamikaze plays to both sides of the fan base, presenting a fair mixture of old-school Twista style with enough formulaic stuff thrown in to keep the kids happy. On the "OG" end of things you get tracks like the R. Kelly-produced round-the-way ballad, "So Sexy," and "Pimp On," a player's anthem featuring 8 Ball, Too Short, and the legendary Don "Magic" Juan. But it's the trendier tunes like Kanye West's parody-within-a-parody, "Slow Jamz," and the hustler's anthem, "Higher" (featuring the aforementioned Luda), that make the most noise. --Rebecca Levine

5.0 out of 5 stars DONT GET TWISTA TWISTED Y'ALL, January 28, 2004
This review is from: Kamikaze (Audio CD)
Twista's always been my favorite rapper for lyrics, his flo and his articulation. TRUST ME, ITSWORTH THE WAIT. One of my favorite albums OF ALL TIME.

7. Drinks (8/10) WESTCOAST feelin beat, nice metophors.
8. BAdunkadunk (8/10) Down South Club vibe
9. One last time (6/10) Gangsta beat, Twista's rappin too slow.
10. So Sexy (10/10) ANOTHER HIT !!! R.Kelly and TWIST.
11. Higher (9/10) FASTEST TRACK it PUMPS ME UP! Best collabo is twista and ludacris. Go get Ludacris f/ Twista "Freaky Thangs".
12. Snoopin' (11/10) BEST TRACK!! EVERYTHINGS PERFECT !!
13. Like a 24 (6/10) Down South Club beat. Its aight.
14. Hope (7/10) Every album needs a deep track. Chorus hot.
15. Sunshine (7.5) I like da remix. Again, lyrics is tight.
16. Art & Life (8.5) STR8 Spittin, no hook and its savage.
NOWADAYS, ALBUMS GOT 2 or 3 really good tracks. But with TWISTA'S KAMIKAZE, you can just let it play from Track 1 to 16!
This is Adrenaline Rush's Follow up and Twista just keeps gettin better. Cant nobody come close to dat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Twista Brought it Home (4 stars), July 9, 2005
This review is from: Kamikaze (Audio CD)
It's been a long time comin' for Twista to finally break out into the limelight, but with an album of this caliber, I think it was better this way. Lyrically, Twista is in a league of his own, and has often outshined people on their own songs, which makes it pretty hard for people to hold it down together with Twista on his own. But luckily, most of the tracks showcase Twista on his own or with people just doin' the hooks, such as the radio-made "So Sexy" w/ R. Kelly. Twista pretty much kills every track he is on, including the opening two tracks "Get Me" and "Kill Us All". Of course everybody knows how good "Slow Jams" was w/ Kanye West and Jamie Foxx, but I think it should have ONLY been on Twista's cd. The Kanye West-produced "Overnight Celebrity" is a standout track too. The best song on here though, "One Last Time", is a track where Twista is not even rappin' in his normal fast pace, but rappin' at an average speed, in which he songs better than most people who can ONLY rap at a regular speed. Another highlite, which closes out the album is the stutter-step neat of "Art & Life" w/ Memphis Bleek, Freeway, and Young Chris. This song would have been better though if Young Chris was replaced w/ Beanie Sigal, and maybe replacin' Bleek w/ Jay-Z. But hey, you can't ask too much since this album gave us so much anyway. Here's to Twista comin' back even stronger, hopefully with the same marketing and publicity as before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Did You Even Read Your Own Review Before You Saved It?, August 30, 2004
By Norfeest "Yes Yes Y'all" (Washington DC USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Kamikaze (Audio CD)
This last reviewer obviously lived under a rock for the last 15 years, is a white guy, or is just getting out of jail because his review is littered with comments that were WAY out of touch with hip hop.

1) "What happened to good rappers like 2pac and Notorious B.I.G., who were about the message and not the money?"

You obviously haven't heard Biggie's "Life After Death" album which overflows with the same content. And 2 Pac? What was the message on "All Eyes On Me"? Was the message that he hated the east coast? And don't even get me started on "Made Ni@@aZ" feat The Outlawz from the "Gang Related" soundtrack? And I quote "I'm a Bad Boy killa / Murder muthaf**kas daily / the feds trail me / so my alias' Makaveli"? And let's not forget that he's draped in diamonds and tossing money everywhere in the video. Now what was the message there, that he's a rich murderer? Please. Fill me in if I missed something. And remember, no matter what label Tupac was on when he made those records, the fact remains.....that Tupac DID make those records.

2) "What happened to the songs about violence, political issues and annoyance with the media? Well, Eminem, 50 Cent and Dr. Dre do that, so I'd choose them over idiots like Twista anyday."

"Violence, POLITICAL ISSUES, and annoyance with the media"? While 2 out of 3 isn't bad, name ONE song where 50 speaks on political issues. Eminem tried on "White America", but that hardly qualifies as "political". And Dr. Dre doesn't cover any of those topics...well, he used to cover violence. But his presence doesn't count behind the mic and anyone with an ear for good music knows this. If they're political, then I guess acts like Dead Prez, Immortal Technique, and Public Enemy are the second coming of the black panther movement, huh? Riiiiiiight.

3) "Em and 50 have actually been through s*** in their lives so they have actual street cred."

WTF is "street cred"? Please. Em has no street cred. He's not even from Detroit. Stop that. Maybe 50 did have some "street cred" when he came out, but if you've been to NY within the last two months you'd know that he's beginning to lose his mind and what little cred he has.

4)"So don't waste your time with this commercial crap. If you must get commercial crap, stick with Chingy or Ludacris."

What?! Em, Dre, and 50 aren't commercial? I tell you what, go and purchase the "Up In Smoke Tour" on DVD and look into that crowd that they are performing for. Tell me how many thugs, gangstas, and underground heads you see in that crowd. And when was the last time you saw 50 and he wasn't advertising his clothing line or his brand of tennis shoes? Now if THAT ain't commercial, I don't know what is. That whole Shady/Aftermath/G Unit camp is as commercial as it gets in this rap biz. Wake up and take off the blinders man.

And remember this, back in the day doesn't begin when B.I.G. and Pac came out. There were rappers before them and they had skills too. Rappers back in the day had to have skills to get on, not lots of jewelry and rims. 50 has no skills. He's spitting average lines over hot beats. That don't make a tight MC. Same with Dre. Em has skills, but he's losing steam. Let's be real.....you're biased and it's showing.

I don't normally stray away from writing reviews, but those dumb comments were too out of touch for me to ignore.
