Editorial Reviews

2008 UK EP from the American Alternative rockers, their first release since leaving the major label world and retreating back into Indiedom. With a checkered past filled with controversy and great music, the band now has creative control back in their own hands and intend to do it their way this time, Jack White be damned! Features four new tracks performed by a new and improved Von Bondies, still fronted by Jason Stollsteimer. In the Act.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take your time March 4, 2008
Format:Audio CD
Parting ways from their former label really doesn't hurt the Von Bondies' sound at all, and they don't seem to have have lost their momentum after a few band members left. And the EP "We Are Kamikazes Aiming Straight For Your Heart" is a great example -- prepping for their third album, this vastly underrated rock band erupts into a blazing four songs full of blazing spare-bones riffs and Britpoppy edges.

They kick it off with style -- a ringing nimble riff that sets off "Pale Bride," a foot-tapping, hard-nosed rocker full of driving aggressive riffs and squealing electronic squiggles. "You're all alone/and I'm the pain/pay no mind/that I don't care anymore/and on your way/take your time/to read what's on the wall..."

It might leave you exhilarated and breathless, because the Von Bondies really cram it with fiery instrumentation and breakneck rock rhythms. They slow down a bit for "21st Birthday," a catchier yowling rocker that sounds like a criticism of Hollywood starlets ("Never gonna live to see your 21st birthday/never gonna have to see a prettier face again!").

They take a detour into poppier territory with the more Beatlesy "Wake Me Up," with its peppy riffs, bells and sunny vocal style. It's got some dirt around the edges, but it's... catchy. And finally they veer back into rock'n'roll turf with "I Don't Wanna," a landslide of grimy riffs and kinetic basslines, along with the lament that "I don't wanna be this way anymoooooore!"

I have to say, if this EP is indicative of where the Von Bondies are planning to go with their next album, then I'm going to be first in line to snatch up a copy. These people have plenty of ferocious rock'n'roll energy and lots of musical skill, which they've polished without losing their gritty edges.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome March 6, 2008

Every song on this ep is good. Pale bride the first track is very catchy. 21st birthday is a really fun song. I think each one of the songs could be a potential single. If their new album sounds anything like this it will be a hit.

Basically, the song writing is brilliant. i only paid 5 bucks for it at one of their shows but i would definitly pay the full price for this one even though its only 4 songs its worth it.
