I bought this as a supplemental book for my beginner's Japanese college course. I have been studying the Kana for about a week now and this technique has proven to be effective for me. The technique used for teaching the Kana in this book is through the use of pictures. The pictures used are extremely helpful for memorizing the Kana characters. I highly recommend this book for college students who are enrolled in beginner Japanese courses.

"Kana Can Be Easy" is a book that teaches one how to write and recognize various forms of hiragana and katakana. I really like this book because the drawings really fit the characters and helps one remember what each of the letters stand for. It's a very good book for beginners who are interested in learning Japanese. I'd definitely recommend it and I'm usually very picky about books. I learned a lot from this book, but it is also very important to practice writing characters repeatedly on paper because there isn't enough room in this book. Although this book isn't very recent, the content of it is still very relevant and great. Buy it :) Japanese is fun.

BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT,This is the best little book you'll find in order to teach yourself Katakana and Hiragana. If you have struggled before (like I did) to teach yourself, then do yourself a favour and buy this book. I taught myself both alphabets within a week and was reading Kana after my first day of using this book (luckily I live in Tokyo, so had lots of practical practice). This book doesn't have any additional reading exercises which is one disadvantage; however you'll quickly learn and memorise and most importantly remember the individual Kana. Most of all it's really fun to use and learn and to see immediate results! Quite simply Brilliant!

I tried a few other books and had a really tough time remembering the kana. Writing them over and over agin just wasn't working. But this little book was terrific and helped me associate the kana with images and phrases.

Great study aid.,

Kana Can Be Easy is a great tool if you are picking up the Japanese in school or just want to learn it by yourself. It offers you the normal stroke order, pronunciation of the kana, comparisons to any similar symbols in both Hiragana and Katakana, and even an area to practice each symbol yourself a dozen times. Each symbol will also have an associated picture help you remember them which is quite helpful as you will be quickly learning 90+ of them. Also included with each kana is a section that shows variants of how each one of them can be written several ways, demonstrating what is and what is not permissible. While the book does cover Katakana and Hiragana I will mention it only covers the 46 basic symbols of both. The appendix in the back however will cover and discuss all the rules you want for the symbols using the Ten Ten & Maru (ga, gi, gu, ge, go. pa, pi, pu, pe, po.) as well as those with the smaller kana (kya, kyu, kyo.) Also covered are the double vowels, double consonants, punctuation, and even writing the three particle markers. This book is great for beginners and I recommend picking it up earlier than your pick up your textbook so you can get a head start. It is a small book that is packed with great information which makes it a perfect study aid for any beginning Japanese student.

A little too easy...,
This review is from: Kana Can Be Easy (Paperback)
"Kana can be Easy" is designed to be a supplemental learning tool for beginning Japanese learners, to learn the two kana alphabets, hiragana and katakana, used in basic Japanese. It is modeled after the "Kanji Pictographix" book, using a mnemonic picture in the general shape of the kana. While it may be effective for some people, for me it is just a little too easy. Learning the two simple kana alphabets is not very difficult, and does not require mnemonic pictures. I found a workbook, which uses repetitive writing exercises followed by simple quizzes, to be a much more effective learning method. |
