Tries hard. Falls hard., June 9, 2008
This review is from: Kane Volume 1: Greetings From New Eden (Paperback)
I wanted to like Kane, but couldn't. Although it had aspirations of grandeur, the results felt too... well... amateur; an early effort by fans of the genre, rather than seasoned professionals.
A lot of this stemmed from the artwork. As much as I appreciated the effort of developing this unique style, I still didn't like it, and actually had a hard time following the action because of it. Similarly, the very stark art didn't justify the amount of splash pages - dramatic moments that just weren't there.
Despite being the first book, I felt like I was thrown into the deep end when it came to plotting, and was on the back foot throughout. I couldn't connect to any of the characters and felt like I was watching a late night Cinemax cop thriller (except without the nudity).
