When Kane's grandfather, owner of Compton's Funeral Home, decides to fight back, Berry sends his "cousin" Regina to dig up dirt on the Benedicts. Regina only agreed to help because she feels she owes Berry for his generosity years before, but by the time she finds her spine, Berry's holding her young son hostage. In Turn-Coupe, Louisiana, the peace of the recently dead is being destroyed by a war between funeral homes. The powerful Berry Association will do anything to bury its competition. Lewis Crompton, the owner of Crompton's Funeral Home, refuses to fold under the price gouging scheme of Berry to drive the competitors out of the lucrative market.

Gervis Berry sends Regina Dalton, who he blackmails into doing his bidding, to dig up dirt to be used to destroy Lewis. Regina soon meets Lewis's grandson "Sugar" Kane Benedict, a lawyer. Kane finds himself very attracted to Regina, but knows he cannot trust her because she is out to ruin his grandfather. He plans to pour on the "Sugar" to obtain the truth from Regina, who is attracted to Kane. However, she knows that her feelings for Kane cannot go anywhere because she cannot afford to cross Gervis without her family suffering grave consequences.

New York Times best selling author Jennifer Blake is renowned for her torrid contemporary novels. Her latest book, KANE, is the first in a series set in Turn-Coupe. Love the "Benedict Family" series. You definitely need to read this series in order because each one relates to the one before. You'll fall in love with these men. True Southern Gentlemen.

"Kane" was the first book by Jennifer Blake I'd read. The back cover blurb sounded interesting enough for me to give her a chance. The first chapter had enough chemistry between Kane and Regina to have hooked for the rest of the book.

But to be completely honest, I didn't care for Regina's character. I don't like the way she treated Kane. I kept wondering what the heck Kane saw in her. I also thought the fact that she kept giving in to her cousin's blackmailing made her character come off as weak. She didn't seem like a genuine person until the very end of the book. One of her few redeeming qualities was the love for her son (which is the major reason she allows herself to be blackmailed in the first place).

However, I loved Kane. He was a typical alpha male/southern gentlemen. Ms. Blake also does a beautiful job with her descriptions of the sultry south. She paints a vibrant and 3-dimensional picture for someone who's never been to the south before. She also does a good job of setting the book up as a series, since she introduces other members of the Benedict family.

All in all, "Kane" was a good story. I just wished Regina hadn't been so two-faced.
