Prone to electrical shorts
on January 14, 2013
I use this to connect an Apple TV to a VGA compatible monitor and get sound from the stereo output. I think Kanex is limiting their customer base a little by focusing on the ability to connect to a projector, this works for any VGA device and is a great way to use an old monitor as a TV. While I'm happy with it, this is the second one of these I've had to purchase. The first one worked for a month or so but then the sound became garbled and useless when we made the mistake of connecting a subwoofer to our speaker device, and that subwoofer was also plugged in to charge. I've seen people with similar issues and I suspect the same thing happened to them- an electrical surge can destroy whatever is converting the HDMI sound to stereo. So be be careful what you connect to the stereo port, if possible. That said, buying a second one was still cheaper than buying a a new TV or monitor with an HDMI port and I wasn't able to find an alternative product that does the same thing, so it's still worth it.
Dropped from 3 stars to 1. We have now had 3 of these go bad and at this point I'm not wasting my money on another one. Each time it was a different but similar cause- we'd plug in a new device, or even just turn on a device that was already connected and had been working fine. And suddenly, the sound would get irrevocably warbled or the picture would disappear altogether.
