Stopped working after two uses. Kanex did not honor warranty. (UPDATED)
on March 18, 2014
Title says it all. This cable worked fine the first two times I used it. On the day after Amazon's 30 day return window expired, I tried using it again and it did not work at all. A different cable from another manufacturer worked fine in the same configuration.
I tried contacting Kanex through their support web page. I created a support request ticket, which Kanex seems to have ignored. It's been 10 days now without a response. Both the support request and 'contact us' pages on their site are nothing more than web forms, lacking a phone number.
This cable was used twice, gently, and stored in a safe location until it was needed the third time, when it failed to work at all. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a $34 cable to work for more than two uses.
UPDATE, March 28, 2014
Kanex eventually did respond to my support ticket, telling me they could replace my cable if they tested it and found it defective, but warned that if it was not defective I would have to pay for return shipping. I agreed and requested a shipping address to return the cable. (NOTE: As of this date, their site has NO real contact information listed anywhere - no telephone, no mailing address, no option to chat with a rep. The "Contact Us" option links to a web form, which they warn should not be used for support requests. The only option for support is to fill out a different web form in their "Technical Support" area and wait for a response.)
Then they told me they couldn't give me a mailing address until I registered the cable on their website, and they provided a URL for the registration page. I attempted to connect to that page, but it was broken. It partially loaded a pop-up window but the window remained empty, and eventually the web browser displayed a website timeout error. (UPDATE: I later found a different URL that brings up a working registration page. I do not know if this page was available at the time of my support request, but even if it was, that was not the URL they told me to use.)
I explained that the registration page was broken. They asked me for the error message, and I relayed it. Once again I requested a mailing address to return my defective cable. Once again they ignored my request, AND CLOSED THE SUPPORT TICKET. So, after three weeks they closed my ticket without ever resolving the problem.
I contacted Amazon and told a support rep everything that happened. Thankfully they were actually helpful, and given the unusual circumstances they agreed to exchange my defective cable for a working one. I'll update this review again once I receive the replacement cable and have had a chance to use it more than twice.
NEW UPDATE: July 3, 2014
Amazon (NOT Kanex) did send me a replacement cable, and I returned the defective one. I have used the replacement cable three times so far, and it worked each time. You might be wondering why don't I use it more often. The reason is simple: I have some thunderbolt devices in constant use, and others that I connect occasionally on an as-needed basis. Given my bad experience with the previous defective Kanex cable, I do not want to trust the replacement with full-time duty. So I store it with those same thunderbolt peripherals that are only used occasionally. Meanwhile, I have had two Apple cables and one OWC cable in constant use for several months, and have never had an issue with them.
