Book Description

January 10, 2007
The Kangaroo Pouch introduces young children, ages 2-to-8, to the concept of surrogacy. The story is narrated by a young kangaroo named Oliver whose mother has decided to help another family have a baby. The Kangaroo Pouch gently guides the reader on the surrogacy journey and answers questions they may have such as, why would someone choose to be a surrogate? What will family life be like during the pregnancy?  And most importantly, what happens when the surro-baby is born and given back to their biological parents?

The Kangaroo Pouch
is designed to act not only as a conversation starter, but also as a "how-to" manual for children to refer to throughout the surrogacy journey. The book has been reviewed by child specialists to ensure that it conveys age-appropriate messages.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

The Kangaroo Pouch is a touching children's story of how one happy family can help to create another. This tale of a family created through surrogacy is a brilliant, clear understanding of what is sometimes a complex conversation for adults to share with a child.

The Kangaroo Pouch is a simple and special book that all families touched by the surrogacy process will love reading with their children. Sarah has an exciting and genuine approach in telling the story through the eyes of a surrogate's child. Surrogacy is a rewarding experience for all who participate in creating families through this special journey.

This book is a valuable resource for every family and I am thrilled to share The Kangaroo Pouch with all people involved with the surrogacy process.

This is a heartwarming and beautifully presented story for any child, but absolutely heavensent for any family with young children whose lives have been touched by a surrogate pregnancy. The gently told story explains the way surrogacy unfolds in the soothing tale of a young kangaroo whose mother helps a couple realize their dream of having a child. Charmingly illustrated and beautifully written, it's a book that all children will enjoy and which will help them understand that families are made in many ways. For the children of surrogates and the families they work with, it is an invaluable resource to explain in broad strokes the process and open a discussion about what to expect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful for overall surrogacy, April 1, 2008

My children 4 and 6 really like this book. I purchased it because we're going to be a surrogate for a great couple and I wanted something written for their age about surrogacy.

My only negative is that it's a bit heterosexist . . . we are helping to male kangaroos and the story is about a husband and wife kangaroo . . . perhaps I should write something :)

I gave this gift to a family that is dealing with surrogacy and couldn't find the words to explain it to there other children. It is a great book for the under 6 crowd, but over that, it did not have enough details. It is a definate buy!
