Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-Decorative, unusual full-page illustrations, bordered by brightly patterned frames with scalloped black edges, depict an interesting variety of 24 creatures with their babies. Codfish, penguins, dragonflies, and otters appear along with the more common rabbits, frogs, horses, and pigs. Notes at the end supply additional information about each species, describing its habitat and life cycle. Rather than showing the animals realistically, the artwork emphasizes dynamic shapes and brilliant colors. The goats' coats are splashed with flowers, the moose are purple and the pigs blue, and the tigers have turquoise stripes. Browne is from Zimbabwe, and her stunning work reflects African textile design and artistic techniques. Although not scientifically realistic, the pictures are exciting and handsome.

From Booklist

Ages 3-6. Similar in style and format to Browne's well-received African Animals ABC (1995), this companion book takes on the popular topic of animals and their offspring. The target audience of preschoolers will be engaged by both the playfulness of the text and what they learn from it: "Cods have codlings / Penguins have chicks / Moose have calves / Rabbits have kits." Brown brings a fluid touch to her big, brilliantly colored paintings. The robust portraits, framed by borders with ethnic motifs (for instance, Aboriginal Dreamtime symbols for kangaroos and joeys), display fine brushwork, dynamic patterns, and expert composition. The detailed notes about the 24 beasts, including familiar ones like horses and ducks and less well-known creatures like otters and moles, should get the approval of adults sharing this appealing offering with curious tikes. A whole lotta fun. Julie Corsaro

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Way to Learn About Animals and Their Offspring!, February 26, 2010

This review is from: Kangaroos Have Joeys (Hardcover)
This book teaches both children and parents about the names of different baby animals. Each page has beautiful illustrations of adults and babies and says things such as "Kangaroos have Joeys" or "Goats have Kids" and "Otters have Pups"! It is engaging enough to entertain a toddler while informative enough to be useful in teaching children about nature for many years thereafter.
