Glorious!,
By Anthony Fodor (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kansas City 6 (Audio CD)
These small sessions reveal a very different side to Basie's swing. Before stumbling across this disk, I had only heard his big band recordings, which of course are amazing. This is a little different. It still swings, but it is more intimate. Chamber music, if you will, rather than the full orchestra. The smaller setting allows the soloists (not the least of which is Basie himself) to shine a little bit more. If you are not familiar with his big band legacy, this of course isn't the place to start. There are many great overviews of that body of work. But if you are already a convert, you may enjoy this wonderful little disk.

Basie's swing and blues,
This review is from: Kansas City 6 (Audio CD)
Good music, no doubt about it, but it just doesn't swing as hard as one might expect from a band led by Basie, with Eddie "Cleanhead" Winson on sax and vocals and Louis Bellson on drums.
Everyone is doing fine (Willie Cook's trumpet, Joe Pass' guitar, Niels H-O Pedersen's bass), but it seems to me that the chemistry was not 100 % right on that particular session.
