More About the Author

When he decided to become a writer, it was sports that pulled and pushed at the words of Mark Stallard. A native Kansan, Stallard was born in Topeka--his father's nomadic blood keep the family on the move, and by the time he was seven, Stallard had lived in five different Kansas communities. While he never had enough stuff to compete in baseball and basketball, Stallard loved sports.

After attending high school in Ralston, Nebraska, he returned to the Sunflower state to study Education and English at the University of Kansas. Stallard also studied journalism at Wichita State University, winning the school's top Journalism Merit Award for magazine writing. Stallard eventually covered sports for the Wichita Eagle, as well as writing for other magazines. In 1993, he received a Master of Liberal Arts from Baker University.

After writing and submitting proposals for several different book ideas, Stallard landed his first book deal almost by accident, and Kansas Royals Facts & Trivia was published--although just barely--in 1999. Since then, Stallard has written and published more than 10 other books, including Kansas City Chiefs Encyclopedia (third edition, August, 2013), AFL to Arrowhead, Wildcats to Powercats, Tales from the Jayhawks Gridiron, Then Landry Said to Staubach...., and Otis Taylor: Football from My Own Heart.

The third edition of Tales from the Jayhawks Locker Room was published in 2012 and received a high-praise, 5-star review on Amazon: "Great book! If you're a Jayhawks fan, I guarantee you'll enjoy this. Very well written and an easy read, I finished it in one day. Highly recommended."

Stallard's most recent release is the third edition of his Kansas City Chiefs Encyclopedia, which has received several top reviews: "While Pro Football Reference.com has a wider scope in some categories, this book contains much that is not there, like extensive team records. A recommended pleasure for Chiefs loyalists."

I purchased this book for a quite dedicated chiefs fan and he was overwhelmed with all the facts, details, and history that is contained within this book. It is easy to find the fact that you are looking for because the book is well organized. There are many photos (B&W) throughout the book with a special color section in the middle. A great addition to any KC Chiefs fan's library.

Mark Stallard does a superb job of covering the Chiefs' history, giving colorful descriptions of a scores of players (famous and not so well known) and of the highlights of the seasons for Kansas City. Some of my favorites whom I had met, Jerry Mays and Willie Lanier, are given excellent coverage as are the players of various years through 2004. Unfortunately, this edition came out before Larry Johnson established himself as one of the league's great rushers; but an excellent synopsis of Priest Holmes is there, along with Buck Buchanan,Lenny Dawson, Joe Montana, Ernie Ladd and others. I thoroughly recommend this volume to any Chiefs' or NFL fan. The $8.12 edition is spotless and attractively and sturdily bound.

This is a very thorough work, in which one can find a photo and something written up about every Chief ever in the All Time Roster. The more important players are given bigger write-ups in separate sections for 1) the elite Chiefs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, 2) those in the Chiefs Hall of Fame, and 3) "Other Chiefs Greats." This edition has season summaries through the 2003 season with interesting but limited commentary. I would like to have seen more written on the individual seasons. It contains some team and individual stats for passing, rushing, and receiving for each season but is limited (no defensive interceptions, e.g.), and it does not present the offensive stats by individuals season-for-season or lifetime. However, it gives Chiefs records (very thorough) up to the time of publication and presents regular starters and draft choices for each season.

The color is also there, not just in the form of color photographs but in the introductions and franchise history section, the writeups of playoffs and championship games, and the stories of the head coaches and owner Lamar Hunt.

So, while Pro Football Reference.com has a wider scope in some categories, this book contains much that is not there, like extensive team records. A recommended pleasure for Chiefs loyalists.
