From the Back Cover

Kansas Curiosities is your round-trip ticket to the wildest, wackiest, most outrageous people, places, and things the Sunflower State has to offer. Humor columnist Pam Grout has combed Kansas for one-of-a-kind gems that make her home state truly unique. You'll see artwork fashioned solely from fossilized shark teeth, spend the local "funny money" that bears the likenesses of such Kansas luminaries as William Burroughs, and discover an underground city beneath an ordinary thrift shop.Whether you were born and raised in Kansas or are a recent transplant, Pam Grout's home-grown humor will have you laughing out loud as she introduces you to the neighbors you never knew you had and take you to the places you never knew existed - right in your own backyard. (5 1/2 x 8 1/2, 288 pages, b&w photos)

About the Author

Author Pam Grout grew up in Kansas, and once had a dog named Toto. Back in 1977 she helped set up the state's first tourism department (Kansas was the last of the 50 to have one), and has been an avid promoter since. A frequent contributor to People magazine, she has also written for Travel & Leisure, Family Circle, Outside, and Modern Maturity among other periodicals, and is author of six books.
In between her travels with her daughter, she conducts creativity workshops.

More About the Author

Pam Grout is a hopeless romantic who still believes the world is a beautiful place, that people are noble and that anything is possible.

For a living (and she always wonders why people think that's such an important question), she writes books and articles for such magazines as People, Cooking Light and Travel & Leisure. She also enjoys writing bedtime stories for her daughter, but that's more about making a life than a living. She's keenly aware there's a huge difference.

In making a life, she has traveled to all the world's continents, learned 59 ways to make a fort out of sofa cushions, perfected a mean tennis forehand and volunteered at a women's prison and free health clinic.

She lives in Lawrence, Kansas with her daughter, Tasman. Check out her sometimes updated website at www.pamgrout.com

5.0 out of 5 stars We LOVED this book!, September 26, 2002
This review is from: Kansas Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities & Other Offbeat Stuff (Paperback)
We've lived in Kansas our entire lives and this book still brought us great fun and many surprises. This is more proof that the Sunflower State may look flat and boring, but those who live here have no dull moments. Thanks for this book! -- The Chartrand family of Olathe, Kansas

3.0 out of 5 stars wrong picture for towers, April 14, 2004

Lena M Heflin (haysville, ks United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kansas Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities & Other Offbeat Stuff (Paperback)
On page ix of the book it is incorrectly labeled as from Canton kansas. The towers shown are from Pratt Kansas. I lived there almost all of my life two houses down from the towers. It would be nice if Pratt were properly credited. Cantons towers do not look the same.
