Book Description

December 1, 1998
A translation of Kant's essay "What is Enlightenment?" 1784) and his Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785) in modern English. The two works included in this volume articulate the fundamental principles of Kant's ethical world view. Written in the period between the American Revolution and the French Revolution, they challenge all free people to think about the requirements for self-determination both in our individual lives and in our public and private institutions.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

In his previous translations of works by Hegel, Professor Rauch transformed difficult German texts into readable English. He has done the same for Kant, producing a version that maintains the depth and authenticity of the primary text in clear English prose. The oral interpretation is intended to help the listener penetrate the more difficult conceptual material. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

"Have the courage to think for yourself!" In spite of its formidable title and its sometimes dense philosophical style, Kant's Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals is dedicated to the proposition that all people can know what we need to know to be honest, good, wise, and virtuous. The purpose of Kant's moral philosophy is to help us become aware of the principles that are already contained within us. Innocence and dependence must be replaced with wisdom and good will if we are to avoid being vulnerable and misguided. According to Kant, freedom of thought leads naturally to freedom of action. When that happens, governments begin to treat human beings, not as machines, but as persons

with dignity. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: Kant's Foundations of Ethics (Audio CD)
Although today his thoughts are commonplace, and his observations apparently mundane...this is only due to the power of his thoughts over time. Kant is truly a turning point for human thought....one of the first clear view of what thinking actually is...

It was Kant who let us know, that we are the creators of our own reality, not simply the puppets of an independent world. When I explained to my teenage daughter, that the reason the guy in front of us seemed to be driving so slowly...was because we were in a hurry...this was Kant's influence on my understanding of my self.

As far as this particular audio program goes, I would give the presentation a B generally, and an A for a philosophy program. Dry but with oasis of depth and clarity. Its a good listen...especially when your driving, and can't fall asleep. LOL
