The Kaplan 800 verbal book is far better than the math version of the same series and has some great tips on what to do if you don't know the vocabulary word given. 1.0 out of 5 stars a completely useless book
just says things that i could already figure out. certainly not the way towards a perfect score. nothing to be learned from this book. the thing to do is to study vocabs. i completely mastered the kaplan vocab book and that served me real well. but this book is a complete waste of your time. i ended up scoring 750 on verbal.

The Kaplan 800 verbal book is far better than the math version of the same series and has some great tips on what to do if you don't know the vocabulary word given. They tell you how, for the antonym questions, to narrow down the answer choices so that you can possibly choose the correct answer without even reading the given vocabulary word. I don't know that I used any of the tips they gave but reading these and knowing that I could possibly answer questions even if I didn't know the vocabulary word did calm me down in the days before I took the test and I scored in the 95th percentile for verbal.

In general, I would recommend studying Barron's test prep material if you are starting well ahead of time (actually their essay writing advice is very useful even if you don't have much time), to study this book from Kaplan if you have just a few weeks or so, and to study Princeton Review if it's the week of.

The book was very helpful in spelling out strategies for the verbal GRE. The vocabulary lists in the back of the book were super as well. I wished there were more sample questions and problems though.

the first time i took the gre, my math score was significantly higher than my verbal, which was a huge surprise to me. i knew i wasn't awesome at analogies and that i often went too quickly through the reading comp, but i've always been way more literary than mathematical - how could this be? easy - i studied math because i knew i wasn't great at it, but i only sort of skimmed verbal because i thought i was awesome there. that meant that on test day, i was pretty well prepared for gre specific math and nowhere near ready for gre specific verbal. sure, i knew 600 very random vocab words, but i was unable to apply them the way the gre wanted me to. i studied this book cover to cover, even the really easy sentence completions and opposites tests in the back. i dedicated myself to mastering gre verbal - and i did! my second gre verbal score was a sweet 90 points higher!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile, March 16, 2011

I used Barron's flashcards, Princeton's Review Cracking the Gre and this book. A must for strategies on sentence completions, analogies, and antonyms. The layout is simpler and more direct than Princeton's. The dictionary in the back of the book is helpful too. The only problem is a lack of practice problems, but you can find practice in other books, online, etc. I just kept re-doing the same practice problems, focusing on the strategy and ignoring if I already knew the word or not.

I would recommend this book for any level of GRE tester.

However, for vocab supplement with Barron's flashcards. These 250 words showed up the most often on my test.

My review is going to be very short and direct.

My top score at the verbal section of the GRE
exam was 510/800. After buying this Kaplan GRE
Exam Advanced Verbal, I reached 670/800. Just
to let you know, only 5% of test takers get a
higher score than me.

I hope this review will help you figure out a
strategy to master the GRE Exam.

Good luck to all !
