3.0 out of 5 stars Dated Information
I have just completed reading the book and going through the exercises.

First the good news - the tutorials which are interspersed throughout the book are fantastic and give invaluable advise on how to attack the test.

The bad news - the book makes reference to being able to go back and review old questions, which is no longer possible with CAT. I believe the bulk...

I have used several GMAT books to fully prepare for my big day. The book that accompanies this package is unremarkable. However, I was amazed at the tech quality of the CD ROM: the "virtual instructors" provide the basic facts about the GMAT and its components. The CD is really what you're paying for.

The astute GMAT student will take and review all 4 practice tests on the CD. Please note--the Math sections are A LOT tougher than those appearing on real GMAT. Don't be discouraged by poor results on these sections!

The Verbal sections are over-simplified. I think they give prospective test-takers a false sense of security on test day. Obtain an English grammar/usage book to supplement the Kaplan materials.

Of course, you MUST purchase the Offical GMAT prep-book. ("Ain't nuthin like the real thing bay-bay.") Do the real questions after you've completed the Kaplan tests. You should be peaking at this point. Take the plunge!

Finally, I found it helpful to "log" my errors for each section. That's right, a log. Try it--it works.

Bonne chance! (relax, no french on the gmat)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good study guide, November 26, 2000
By A Customer
I think I would highly recommend this book as one of the study guides that one should actively consider buying as part of one's preparation for the GMAT. The practice tests though hard gives one a good feel for the actual test. I scored pretty miserably in those tests never crossing 560 in any one of them. However, on the real thing, I managed a score in the 90th percentile. The math section of the practice tests in this book is particularly a good representation of what one would see in the actual exam. I would not say that for the verbal section though. Along with this guide I would also strongly recommend the GMAT Verbal workout and Grammar Smart both by The Princeton Review to augment one's preparation in the verbal section. Finally, one should not get misled by the level of questions, that one would see when one would use the official GMAT Powerprep software now provided free by ETS. However, it is useful to go through that to get a feel for the software that one would encounter on the actual test.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed, April 7, 2000

Although the book itself does not differ greatly from the other prep textbooks, the software that comes with it is truly exceptional!

Not only does it offer 4 full GMAT practice exams, but it also features virtual instructors that take you through all the strategies of taking the test, the drill questions, math and verbal reviews, and your OWN personalized study plan compiled after you take the diagnostic test.

The software even includes a set of games that let you practice your GMAT skills in a fun way.

While I do own most of the existing GMAT prep software kits, if I'd have to choose only one of them, I'd pick this one, and go with ETS's Official Guide instead of their Powerprep (same questions, less $ to pay).

5.0 out of 5 stars It did the job!, October 2, 2000
By A Customer
I didn't have a lot of time to prepare so I focused on the practice tests on the CD. This really worked--they were just like the real thing. I looked at some other GMAT books my friends used but the explanations for the test answers were nowhere near as good as in this book. But don't just use the CD; the intro and practice exercises for each questions type in the book were useful too. Just don't bother with the paper-and-pencil practice test in the book since there are plenty of tests on the CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars I scored 680 on the real thing!, September 8, 2000
By
"aleksey@prontomail.com" (Waltham, MA United States) - See all my reviews
Hello! I studied on the weekends over the course of several months with Kaplan, Official Guide by ETS, and Verbal Workout by Princeton Review. The three 'simulation' tests I took with Kaplan were great in preparing me to the real thing, but my scores were 580,560 and 560 as if I regressed in my knowledge over the course of several months. Do not despair if your scores on Kaplan are too low! It is an inaccurate predictor of your scores on the real test (in my case at least). The quant section on Kaplan is comparable to the real test; the verbal section is not. To prepare for the verbal part, I would recommend the questions on the Official Guide by ETS (including the essay topics in the back) and the Verbal Workout by Doug French. Good Luck to all of you!

5.0 out of 5 stars SURPRISED WITH THE RESULTS!!!!, March 15, 2001
By
Herkdrvr (Montpelier, VT) - See all my reviews
I purchased this book, along with Doug French's verbal workout approximately 1 month before taking the exam. I did approximately one lesson per night, according to the "plan" that the CD gave me. I scored a 590 on the diagnostic, and then scored 560, 540, and 530 on full length practice tests. I felt as though I was actually regressing and becoming more stupid!! The math sections are more difficult than the actual test, which prepared me for the exam more than I expected. The verbal is representative of the actual exam, and I highly recommend purchasing the book by French. That helped me a lot also. Bottom line: I scored a 660 on the actual test. I was thorougly pleased with this book. I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone who would like to study for the GMAT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Kaplan, October 3, 2000
By A Customer
10 years after taking any sort of standardized test, I scored in the 99th percentile. This book, and especially the CD software, gets all the credit. I had also purchased the Princeton Review math book and found it to be overly complex. The Kaplan book and software gives you enough information to be useful, without getting bogged down in specifics like "this-particular-trick-question-can-be-solved-with-this-simple-14-step-process" (which you would never remember on test day anyway). Thank you, Kaplan!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Preparation Software - Practice Tests Too Tough, January 21, 2001
By A Customer
The software (CD) provides solid preparation for all sections of the test. The mini tests for each section are very good, but the full length practice tests are much tougher than the real thing. That's better than the opposite though. I scored a 570 on the Kaplan Practice and a 750 on the real thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Book, December 4, 2000
By A Customer
This is the best book for GMAT prep on the market by far. The tips were good, the CD rom had a lot of useful information, and there were a lot of practice tests. The CD rom not only scored the practice tests, it categorized the number of right and wrong answers and noted when a correct answer was changed to an incorrect one and vice versa. The answer explanantions were the best I've encountered. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My final score today was 750!, February 24, 2001

Anna Lukyanova (Memphis, TN United States) - See all my reviews

I bought this particular version from Amazon after reading earlier reviews. The first practice test I took without any practice at all was 590. That was four months ago. Today was my official GMAT test date, and I just came back with 750 (without my essay scores). It took a month with the CD-ROM (I got 590 and 610 on two practice tests, consequently). To all you grad applicants out there! If you want this kind of results, buy without any further doubts. The CD by itself is priceless, the book is also very helpful. I HAVE 750 on my GMAT!! Singing all day.
