4.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point but you'll need to do more
As a career counselor I work with students who are applying to law school and there are a number of books and guides which promise to help them succeed at the LSAT. To get a complete review, I showed this book to a professional prelaw advisor for her opinion as well. Bottom line: this book is a good starting point for LSAT prep. 3.0 out of 5 stars Dipping your toes
So, despite having reread The Firm three times, you're considering applying to law school. And because law school admissions is numbers-oriented, you realize that your 4.0 GPA won't gain you automatic acceptance; you also need to aim for an LSAT score as close to 180 as possible. Fortunately, you have options. You can take a prep course for the LSAT and spend over...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point but you'll need to do more, May 4, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
As a career counselor I work with students who are applying to law school and there are a number of books and guides which promise to help them succeed at the LSAT. To get a complete review, I showed this book to a professional prelaw advisor for her opinion as well. Bottom line: this book is a good starting point for LSAT prep. But you need to start preparing at least 3 months before the exam.

All test questions come from real LSAT tests that have been previously administered. The diagnostic quiz is a great place to start. The correct answers are explained in detail, and the book does a nice job of breaking down the questions into different types and providing clear strategies for tackling each type. To get the most of out of this book, plan to use the online companion.

Mac users beware: we used the CD-ROM in a PC and it was fine, but it didn't appear to be Mac-compatible.

Also-- you should know that taking the 5 full length practice tests included here probably won't be sufficient practice for the exam. Go to the Law School Admissions Council (can't post website here) to purchase additional practice tests and plan to take at least 10 practice tests before the big day.

This probably won't be the only book you need to purchase, but it is a good jumping off point. Plan to start with this book at least 3 months in advance and then finish up with supplementary materials. Good luck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product for the money, March 6, 2010
Not a bad use of money - especially if you aren't dropping a few thousand on actual courses for the LSAT. The CD included with the book doesn't work with any computer that's got Vista or Windows 7 on it (and may not run on some XP systems). This was a source of great consternation, and I almost returned the book until I stumbled across the instructions in the FRONT of the book for online access through Kaplan. Instructions on how to access content or find the instructions TO access the content were nonexistent and did not appear in the table of contents. However, the online access (included in purchase price) includes a number of video lessons, practice quizzes, diagnostic tests, and a couple more practice tests. The value of the online content significantly outweighs the consternation of the CD not working with my computer, and to me, the online content rectifies the CD problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like it., October 3, 2009
By
soxyroxy (Joplin, MO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kaplan LSAT 2010 Premier Live Online (Kaplan Lsat Premier Live) (Paperback)
This is the only LSAT book I have right now, but I like it. It has uses only real LSAT questions from previous exams and contains 3 real LSAT practice tests. The online stuff is mainly a tracker, a diagnostic test, some video tutorials, and some extra quizes.

It has study section on each of the different areas of the exam, then a list of practice questions. Each question is explained in detail. Then there are the three full size practice tests with explanations of the answers (these are older tests) and some extra hints and tips.

Maybe I'm biased because I used Kaplan for the ACT and got a pretty good score - but I like this book. Kind of wish I had gotten it from Amazon because I payed full list price at my local bookstore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Kaplan Review book, July 28, 2010
By
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Kaplan LSAT 2010-2011 Edition is a great asset for any Pre-Law Student.

It features real and official LSAT questions. It consists of the book
itself, a CD including several more practice tests and an online component
as well. They guarantee a higher score with effective use of all their
materials.

Our kids have used the Kaplan books for the SAT and the ACT as well. As with all Kaplan books if you put the time in to do them you get great results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, July 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book is exactly how I purchased it. However, you may want to use a different shipping method. The package was moderately damaged. My previous order of this book by another seller had to be refunded because the package was returned damaged. I don't know what the problem with these books is but they are barely getting to their destination. Overall, I am glad I have it and it is exactly how and what I wanted ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent choice to learn test taking strategies for the LSAT!, June 17, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
If you want to get into the law school of your choice, or any law school for that matter, there is no doubt you are going to have to prepare for the LSAT. Simply being a good "test taker" is not going to be enough nor is that 4.0 you managed to hold onto for so long. There are a lot of people applying for a few slots and the competition will be hot. The difference can be how well you do on your LSATs. You're going to have to work hard, practice, think, and learn additional test taking strategies.

When you work through some of Kaplan's full-length practice tests, you will learn where your strengths lie and where you need to improve. For many people, including myself, it boils down to managing stress levels and focusing during the test. That is where practice comes in. That extra practice and study just may make your dreams come true. The choice is yours: do you want to take a chance or do you want to celebrate when that acceptance letter comes in?

If you intend to prep for a test, you need to dedicate some time and a few dollars. If you really feel you are deficient, perhaps you need a course, but if you simply need practice, this is the book for you. I would also recommend buying some older versions, other "brand" names included, to work with. The more you practice these tests, the more confident you will feel with your ability to not only answer the questions, but answer them within the allotted time frame. For example, I took a real life test a while back. I only took one practice test prior to the actual one and because I haven't taken any tests in some time I went over the time limit. When I was taking the "real" test, time was called just as I finished. You need to be honest in accessing your own skills. This book is not going to teach you anything new, but is intended to help you with your test taking strategies and give a general overview of what types of questions you can expect. The questions are from actual tests.

In this book you will learn about the test, how it is scored, and will see that all important checklist. As an aside, did you know that "The median LSAT scores accepted by the best law schools in the country, such as Yale, Stanford, and Columbia, range from the high 160s to the low 170s. That translates to a percentile figure of 95 and up." You will see numerous informative sidebars such as this one scattered throughout the book.

You'll learn emotional strategies to help you remain stress free, test taking strategies, you'll be able to take full practice tests (with answers and explanations), you learn about the law school application process, and you'll learn how to navigate through test questions. How you use this book, or if you even choose to purchase it, is up to you. The material in this book comes from years of proven research and is one book you may wish to consider if you are determined to get into law school!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely simplified, very user friendly, May 20, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
3 practice tests in the book and 2 on the ROM to help you figure what your weaknesses are so you can work on them as you reinforce your strengths.
You can register with the serial number in the book online @ kaptest -- there are online videos that explain and really reinforce the concepts of each chapter in the book. Also, they have free quizzes online and a different quiz for every month

Covers just about everything, but this shouldnt be your only study aid

5.0 out of 5 stars a good study guide, May 15, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
So, you think you want to be a lawyer ...

Firstly, I have to point out that anyone taking the LSAT most certainly should take a prep course or work their way through a prep book like this one. Sure, you can do fine without it, but for most people the LSAT is a competitive event. It is worth it to do very well.

As far as prep courses/and books go - Kaplan has always produced fine products and this one is no exception. Actually, it's pretty much a no brainer. Get this book and work through it.

I, personally, am already a lawyer but am checking out a few career enhancing moves. Oddly, one of them has taking the LSAT as an early step in the scheme. So, I am working through this book. It isn't difficult or anything like that, but (as I stated earlier) the LSAT must absolutely be approached as a competition. Prior and recent exposure to the materials can't hurt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the LSAT, but there is better out there., May 13, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This guide is what it says it is. It will help you prepare for the LSAT and will raise your score to some extent. It uses real questions from the actual LSAT. What I didn't like was that it is rather dry and could have did a better job at explaining its examples. Still, if all you need is an acceptable score to get into most any law school but not necessarily Ivy league, then this guide is for you. IF you're gunning for top tier, consider this just your mere starting point for studying and consider also getting some of the PowerScore LSAT books to supplement. Kaplan is not giving away all of their secrets. After all, they makes their money in the $1,000 tutorial services. Why would they really want to serve it all out in a book?
