Pretty good source of practice questions,
By
This review is from: Kaplan Medical USMLE Step 1 Qbook (Paperback)
It's a Qbook. It has questions and answers. If you need study tips or strategies, try websites, blogs, your school advisors. If you want practice questions, this is a good resource.
This will definitely not replace using an online QBank, but it has USMLE-style questions with decent explanations, in a portable format so that you can study even when you can't be on your computer. I actually keep it on my nightstand and do some questions every night in bed (nothing like board studying to make you sleepy). It is a better Qbook than the First Aid Qbook, which has many errors and sometimes weak explanations. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it.

YOU CAN TRUST KAPLAN TO DO A GREAT JOB,
By Helpful Bob "Bobby" (Bellingham WA) - See all my reviews

Kaplan delivers, and that is just a fact. They are a company that exists to help you ace your exams whatever it may be. I like the fact that Kaplan brings to the table years of experience training USMLE candidates. That being said, this is by no means an all in one book or a stand-alone study resource. This is ideally used as a supplement to standard text books like Ganong's Physiology, Harpers Biochemistry , which you can find on amazon.com and USMLE total review which you can find on usmlestep.net and the USMLE FIRST AID series. If you really want to ace the USMLE, you have to have a big budget, and that is a simple truth.

Decent Qbank,

While studying for my Step 1, I tried to use as much material available to me. This Qbook was my alternative to the Kaplan Qbank as I was being cheap and did not have the time to do the entire Kaplan Qbank. It's definitely a good 1000 questions. I still missed quite a few of them and they helped fill my gaps in knowledge. While the answers could be more detailed and informative, they were enough to explain the answers and not bore or exhaust me.
I give it three stars because it's not bad. If you are not doing the Kaplan Qbank, at least do this Qbook! It's very cheap and is well written. But the best Qbank available is USMLE World, I did this Qbank 3 times and got a 99. Good luck to all you future docs!

Overpriced, not very useful,
By Eric Walters "Eric W" (Toledo) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kaplan Medical USMLE Step 1 Qbook (Paperback)
I'll be taking the USMLE in a few months, and i got this book to try to improve my study habits in anticipation of things to come, since it claims to have "powerful strategies to help increase your score".
I have to say that for $30, this book is way overpriced and as a study aid it is completely useless. Buy this only for questions, because there are no "strategies" presented here. That section of this book is mostly just vague repition about studying a lot and testing yourself, and there is no clear study method presented. One of my friends recommended a smaller and cheaper, yet BETTER book called "How to study for the USMLE". I found it much more useful, with a clear, defined study method presented, and even more tips and strategies for doing well. If you're going to get a book to help you ace the USMLE, there are better options out there. |
