I bought this book and basically had 3 weeks to prepare for both the LAST and ATS-W. this book does a Grreat job at explaining answers and giving great tips for the day of the exam. yes the LAST is a common refresher, that's not the issue , the issue is familiarizing yourself with the ways questions are worded. i took both tests on the SAME day (which was exhausting) and passed both exams on the first try!! i would definitely recommend this book to anyone wishing to take these exams! A MUST BUY and there's a guarantee you will pass.

I can only speak for the LAST section of the Kaplan review book (only taken that exam so far). That being said, this book does a good job of preparing you for the kind of math, science, history, literary and cultural components of the exam. No background knowledge is generally needed in approaching any answer, anyway, since all necessary information is in the actual question.

Take one or two practice exams (both in the actual review book and through the NYSTCE website) and you'll be fine. I'm a college student so a lot of the math and science from high school is still in my system. For those who have been out of school for a longer period of time, I'd agree with other reviews and say this is a great refresher manual in different subjects.
