This book delivers results,
By Mrs. G "home school mom" (St. Charles, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kaplan PSAT 2006 Edition (Paperback)
This year's edition is basically the same as 2005's. Last year when my son took the pre-test in the book, he scored a 169. By time he finished the book and took the last practice test, he scored a 211. When he took the actual PSAT test, he scored a 207. The practice tests really help. And Kaplan's easy-to-use book was very readable.

Same as 2005,

While, this book is great, comparing it to the 2005 version I saw that the practice tests were exactly the same. Basically the 2005 version just got a new cover. If you dont have the 2005 version, get the 2006, but if u do buy something else unless you want repeat questions.

all you can expect from a review book,

well what do you expect from a review book. a review and hopefully some useful strategies. most importantly practice. all of those are included here. it includes 3 full length practice tests with answers and explanations. explanations are very important because just knowing you got the wrong answer does not help you learn how to not make the same mistake next time. it tells you some useful strategies to use on the test to save time and optimize your chances of getting the right answer. the part that i liked best was the appendix in the back which included all the things you need to know basically. that is the review section and its pretty big. it includes basic math skills that you need, grammatical errors usually tested for, a huge vocab word list, prefix/suffix lists, and groups of words that are similar. i found that part very helpful in clearing up misunderstandings. basically i don't think there is anything else that a review book can do for you so this is as good as any. oh and i also liked that after every section it had practice problems to see if you are grasping the concept.

Book has mistakes,
By Momoftwosons (Upstate New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kaplan PSAT 2006 Edition (Paperback)
This book (like TOO many of these study guides) has obvious typos and annoying mistakes.
For instance, on page 188 here's what it says: 32. answer (C) blah blah blah...That fits (A) pretty well. Watch out for choice (B). It looks reasonable...but it doesn't quite work, since the author doesn't make such a definitive statement. HUH????? WHAT ABOUT ANSWER (C)????? When you go to their even-more-annoying web site, you can not find where they have bothered to publish any corrections. I'm sick of this nonsense from these books. They're expensive and they should hire editors. |
