I really enjoy the work of Kara Walker. I think she handles the human form in an interesting way and can draw in an audience with something so seemingly simple as a cut out. This book was disappointing for me because a lot of the work is not hers, and the work that is hers seems to be thrown in the book without much thought as to placement and relevance. I think the theme is interesting but the book poorly demonstrates it. There are a few blank pages which are there to give a pause, but the book is not strong enough to require these.
I would not recommend buying this book unless you have an opportunity to go through the pages first, you may change your mind.

i was a bit dissapointed in the content. The imagery was not up to my expectations based on pieces that I had seen in the past.

This review is from: Kara Walker: After the Deluge (Hardcover)
Kara Walker has been one of the most lauded artist of the past decade, coming to prominence in 1997 when she received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship at the age of twenty-right. While much has been made of the provocative and sometimes incendiary nature of her work that deals with race and American history, "After the Deluge" lays bare some of the many sources that have inspired and informed her work. The book accompanied a magnificent exhibition that Walker curated at the Metropolitan Museum of Art using both her own work and work from the museum's collection. The book contains the material from the show though not it's engaging layout, since the book was already in production by the time the show opened. But this books serves as a wonderful and informative introduction to one the most important artists of the the 20th and 21st century.
