3.0 out of 5 stars Useful & fun, but most valuable from a singer's perspective., January 30, 2001

This review is from: Karaoke : Sing Along Guide to Fun and Confidence (Paperback)
I originally bought this book as part of a plan to learn about "the craft" before I jumped right into it. I had been to several Karaoke bars, and was hoping to learn the "ins and outs" before I got up on stage for the first time. This book certainly helped me gain the courage I needed, and taught me the various customs and specific ettiquette surrounding Karaoke. It's section on the various styles of Karaoke singers, and the way to find the songs you can do and will enjoy doing the most was especially helpful. I would have liked to have seen more advice regarding practicing singing and improving my voice, and a more updated list of song sources would have been nice, but this book definitely helped me "find my voice" in Karaoke. One caveat: don't buy the author's veiled warnings about "Karaoke Fanatics", or his obvious disdain for "Singing Startlers" - Karaoke is indeed the common man's way to make a mark, and should not be denied. Being a self-taught crooner, I disagree with him on this one point. While arguably not the definitive work on the subject, "Karaoke : Sing Along Guide to Fun and Confidence" by Scott Shirai is a valuable addition to any Karaoke afficianado's library.
