4.0 out of 5 stars Workout AND instruction, great for practice at home!
This is an excellent review of the basic stances, blocks, punches and kicks that make up the backbone of Karate. Even a beginner or a parent can enjoy doing the workout! If you need a half-hour of practice at home, and want to have fun, buy this tape.

3.0 out of 5 stars Karate For Kids I
The camera focuses from the waist up, some of the time, so you can not see stances or whole body movements during some basic punch and block techniques. My 8 year old liked the music, instructor and the kids his age. He uses the streching exercises he learned from the tape. A good way to get a youngster motivated but not too good for learning techniques.

This is an excellent review of the basic stances, blocks, punches and kicks that make up the backbone of Karate. Even a beginner or a parent can enjoy doing the workout! If you need a half-hour of practice at home, and want to have fun, buy this tape.

The music keeps younger kids interested, the format is friendly, and the instructor has a WONDERFUL way of explaining very clearly what each move is about.

It moves a little fast for a real beginner, and the DVD format would be helpful for pausing it so someone can check the form during a real practice session. The instructions for falling safely seem to be more advanced techniques, and probably belong in one of the later volumes in the series. Overall, this is a great video for a kid who likes karate. I'm about to buy Volume 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Video For Kids Brand New To Karate, September 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Karate for Kids 1 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is perfect for kids brand new to karate. I have a 7 year old practicing tang soo do moo duk kwan, and this video has been very helpful in getting him started. The instructions are clear, easy for a child to understand, and the moves are demonstrated well. I feel that the video packs a lot of learning into a short space of time, and does it very effectively. My only complaint is that the title "Karate For Kids" is somewhat misleading.Rather than teaching Japanese Karate, what this video teaches is Tang Soo Do, a form of Korean Karate similar to Tae Kwon Do. Otherwise, this video is highly recommended.

This video was purchased for a 7-yr old w/6 months karate experience. She takes 1 hour weekly lessons in a big class, but needed an inspiration to practice during the rest of the week. We tried the Dawn Barns kids karate video and were quite disappointed (not enough karate & too new age). So, we purchased this one.

Overall, we're pleased. This is a full video of stretching and karate, including stances, blocks and kicks. There are good descriptions and explanations of every move. It can go a little fast, but it is something we can live with. You should probably have your remote close by so you can REW, slo-mo, pause, etc. to help your child at first. The falls are nice to know, but on our carpet, we'd probably regret trying them! There's talk of respect and focus as well, but it is in proper proportion to the exercises.

The video ends w/a rap-style song of encouragement. I guess it is something of a reward for going through the tape. Not my cup 'a, but the girl likes it!

Overall, she likes the video and the music, and will likely get a lot of use from it. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I bought this to help my kids learn the basic Karate stretches and moves. It shows that at a slow pace, gives the kids a chance to practice them, and then does then at a normal pace. Its a good place for them to start.
