Grade 4-6-This how-to manual ranks a cut above others. It doesn't introduce anything new, but it covers the basics extremely well. Queen keeps the instructions simple, describing blocks, kicks, and stances along with other karate protocol without overwhelming readers. Clear black-and-white photos, a rarity in martial-arts books, will help children put the text into action. Models shown in the photos include both boys and girls of various races. Although this book focuses on karate, students of other martial arts will find much of the information familiar. It will appeal to both slow readers and karate kids who are more interested in making the moves than reading about them.
