5.0 out of 5 stars Wholesome and Educational Book on Karate, July 9, 2001
This review is from: Karate Is for Me (Sports for Me Books) (Library Binding)
With all the senseless violence in publications, it is a pleasure to find the wonderfully wholesome book Karate Is For Me by Fred Neff. After reading this book, it is obvious that this author understands children's needs and parents' concerns. He has written a beautiful story about a little girl, Becky, and her personal journey through the Asian art of karate. The book provides pictures that enhance the narrative in telling the story. I like the way the character in the book, Becky, interacts with the other people in the story and their very positive attitudes and experiences in karate and with one another. This book elevates karate to a very high level activity that is both wholesome and educational. My sister's children enjoyed the book so much that she ended up getting another copy to give to my daughter, who adored it. After reading the book, my daughter's interest in karate blossomed, so my husband and I bought her a copy of Fred Neff's Basic Karate Handbook. She now has several other books by Fred Neff and is enrolled in a karate school, where she finds enjoyment and satisfaction. As an adult with strong values, I greatly appreciate the book Karate Is For Me. It gets my highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karate Is For Me has universal appeal for young people, March 5, 2007
This review is from: karate is for me (Hardcover)
Karate Is For Me tells the tale of a young girl's learning experience with Karate. The book tells the story in such a way as to show the positive side of the learning experience and the good interactions that the characters in the story have with one another. There is no villian, which is interesting in and of itself. This is a good book for a parent or teacher to use with a reluctant reader because the language is simple and clean cut, while the story is interesting enough to keep a young person's attention. The story as such is the type that either a boy or girl might identify with and is structured so that it will be of interest to any young person. I like the fine way the story is composed and the inherent positivism built into the story. Inherent in the story are significant values such as the importance of practicing at home what you learn at school or in otherwords doing your home work. The author Fred Neff has done an excellant job creating a book that will captule young readers interest not only to karate but in reading in general, while teaching useful values, which is a basis for my giving the book a strong recommendation.
