This book describes in detail the techniques of "bo" or staff disarms found in some karate kata and it also decribes "grappling in Armor techniques" found in some karate kata. 5.0 out of 5 stars Karate 'Bo' Take-aways, June 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Karate "Bo" take-aways (Paperback)
Mr. Trimble has given his time and expended his effort to the student, so the student has a practical interpretation of the hand techniques from the Shotokan Karate katas: Jutte, Empi, Hangetsu, Gankaku - Den and Kanku - Sho.
His presentation clearly leads the student through defensive and offensive applications of the hand techniques found in the Shotokan kata. Better than theory, the concept of Ma covered between an unarmed opponent and an armed opponent gives the student a taste for the real time application of the demonstrated techniques.
Karate `Bo' Take-aways is the guide to brighten the students interest in the Shotokan Karate hand techniques used against the long staff.

I agree with the other reviewers. This is a good book.

Disclosure: I have not trained in Shotokan in a long time, and never was a dan grade in that style. However, I have done enough staff work over the years to see the value in Sensei Trimble's efforts.

Guy has studied and aplied karate to a rare extent and writes to help other students see what we've been practicing all along and so very many of us didn't even realize the very practical technique "hidden" in our kata. Reading this book may make your world a bigger, richer place. See if a light doesn't come on for you in your practice.
