The only major function that requires the remote that I wish didn't is switching between inputs.

In fact, I feel like the two systems sound similar, with the GO + Play II being a little boomier and less clear in the lower frequencies.

Pros: Setup is simple/easy, looks incredible, sounds incredible and a plethora of inputs from which to choose.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Harman Kardon MAS 102 Compact, Integrated Music System is a surprisingly nice sound system. I would be happy having this as my sound system in a smaller sized room, but Harman Kardon made some curious decisions that dampen my enthusiasm just a bit, especially considering the premium price.

First the positives:

- Fit, finish, and build seem first rate. The speakers cabinets and CD/radio unit were particularity nice, with a solid high gloss piano black finish. There were no signs of cracks anywhere (as noted in another review). The speakers terminals on the amplifier unit and speakers also seem to be of very high quality.

- Setup was pretty straightforward. The ribbon cable connecting the CD/radio unit to the amplifier unit is a smart way to cut down on cable clutter.

- The sound is good considering the size of the speakers provided. The overall sound is warm, but there is treble produced when called for. The treble seems to tail off a bit at the very top end, but I did not find it objectionable. As far as the bass, it reaches down to about 60Hz as advertised; Harman Kardon seems to have added a bit of boost around 300Hz to make up for the lack of really deep bass, which might explain the overall warm (but not boomy) sound to my ears. The size of the speakers also limits the maximum volume of the system; this isn't a system designed to produce ear-splitting sound levels, but at more typical listening volumes you'll be fine.

- The iPod dock "Bridge III" dock works as advertised. Once I figured it out I was able to move around the iPod menus (using the iPod display itself) to select music.

- I also tried the CD player, FM radio, and AUX input, which all worked as expected.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Design - It's very sleek, attractive and compact, but during unpacking I found a total of 3 cracks in the speaker cases around the back ports. (I have uploaded images showing these.) This to me is unacceptable for the price a consumer will be paying and lowers my opinion of the system greatly. Additionally I do not think these cracks were due to packing because it was packed very well. Looking at them it seems more likely that is is because of the material used in construction of the speaker cases.

Features - I love the FM tuner with the ability to add presets, multiple USB ports, programming that allows me to make new playlists using the current CD or attaching a flash drive, alarms even though I've yet to use them and the remote control which will be especially useful when we move the system to a high shelf. I highly recommend getting the (not included) Harman Kardon Bridge IIIP 30-Pin iPod/iPhone Dock so that it will allow you to use your iPod or iPhone. It works wonderfully with my 5th Gen Video iPod.

Performance - After spending a few minutes going over the owners manual I tested the sound in several ways. When using the FM tuner it comes through very clear and without any static or distortion. The couple of CD's I played sounded great with all the instruments and vocals coming through wonderfully. Then I used my iPod and the variety of music I have sounded *almost* as good as it does on my Harman Kardon GO + PLAY II 30-Pin iPod/iPhone Speaker Dock which still continues to impress me and my guests.

Value - Here is where I have issues.

Pros: Setup is simple/easy, looks incredible, sounds incredible and a plethora of inputs from which to choose.

Con: My only complaint is that if you lose the remote there is no way to change your playback source. Such is the price for such a beautiful system.

the first unit arrived and the FM receiver was broken. i got so far as unpacking the speakers on the second unit and all the mounting scews were missing such that the speaker fell right out of the speaker box. am going to try one more exchange to see if i get a unit that actually works. but hopes are not high.

i have uploaded a picture of the broken speaker immediately as it appeared upon unpacking.

will update this review once the third unit is received.

I was seeking a very compact near audiophile quality bookshelf stereo system that would replace my old massive 1970s oversized receiver and speakers while still retaining the ability to hook up a turntable and just about any other peripheral component including an IPOD. I also wanted a slick design with minimal knobs and buttons and compact speakers that still sounded way beyond their size in my den. H/K succeeded very well. My only complaints are the small buttons on the remote and the need to purchase an adaptor since I wanted to use a serious FM antenna in place of the "wire" antenna supplied.

This system should be a strong consideration if you looking at Bose compact systems and if you are very tight on space. I would recommend that HK consider upgrading their product by redesigning the remote some what (hard to work with XL fingers) , add a CD changer option, expand the radio bands available (AM, HD etc) and add a subwoofer for even deeper bass.

Overall, nice system for the money. (Heavily discounted by a number online sources.)
