Sublime Jazz song stylism.,
By
This review is from: Karen Marguth (Audio CD)
I have long admired performers virtuosistic jet totally involved in jazz idioma. That specific mix of with wit, text, dynamics, strong rhythmic attitudes, interplay with the instruments that makes you hear a singer almost dancing with her voice, totally at ease at any fast or slow tempos. Anita O'Day is the best 'white' example of this; Sheila Jordan, vocalese star Annie Ross and more recently Judy Niemack, Tierney Sutton, the overproduced Karrin Allison are some other great performers I like best. In 2010 I red some raving review of mrs.Marguth self-produced, self-titled last cd (Down Beat, Jazz Magazine). Having noticed the singer's background in pop and country music I was a little... perplex: usually I am let down listening to new supposed 'jazz stars' of the likes. This said: this record is a gem. It is so not only because mrs.Marguth IS that kind of incredible, gifted performer; but the more so because her whole group here is tight and strong, plain and rough in the best sense with its own peculiar sound (and in music this is already saying a lot; the match of mandolin and guitar is GREAT). The singer thrills me with great performances here, and her singing with the only acoustic bass will stay in my mind very long. Mrs.Marguth: if you ever read this please hold on and keep playing (and recording!) great music as in this cd!

Karen sings like the old style hard bob female jazz singers of the past. Great improvosational style and phrasing. She really had my toes tapping.
