Book Description

This beautiful edition of Anna Karenina is worthy of a great literary classic. If you are tired of inferior translations, poor formatting, and typos, then this is the edition for you!

Carefully Crafted Classics strives to publish the electronic equivalent of the finest print editions. Our editions are attractively formatted and painstakingly proofread with attention to the smallest details. We aim to be the luxury line of e-publishing at a modest price.

We are pleased to offer Anna Karenina, called by William Faulkner the best novel ever written, in the excellent translation by Louise and Aylmer Maude (1918). Almost all of the other English language Kindle editions of Anna Karenina use the faulty, unrevised translation by Constance Garnett (1901) (and some do not even name Garnett as the translator). The Maude translation is also used in notable print editions, including the Oxford World's Classics and Everyman's Library editions and (in somewhat revised form) the Norton Critical Edition.

Praise for the Maude Translation of Anna Karenina

From Encyclopedia of Literary Translation into English. Classe, Olive (Ed.). Chicago, IL: Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers, 2000. Vol. 2, 1405-1406:

"None of the early translations of Anna Karenina is acceptable [including the unrevised Garnett (1901)]. The appearance of the Maude version (1918) represents a turning point . . . . Louise and Aylmer Maude knew Tolstoy's pre-revolutionary Russia; she was born and educated there, and he spent many years in Moscow. They knew Tolstoy personally and had the benefit of consultation with him and his approval of their translations."

This edition includes:

Leo Tolstoy: Life in Images |
Leo Tolstoy: A Short Biography |
Preface to the Maude Translation |
Selected Characters in Groups |
Selected Characters in Alphabetical Order |
Characters in Order of Appearance |
Russian Words |
The Text of Anna Karenina with active table of contents and 5-way controller navigation for all parts and chapters |

Worth twice the price!

A captivating classic such as Anna Karenina is worth the time you will devote to reading it. Isn't it also worth a small price to enjoy that time with a truly high quality edition? For less than half the price of a paperback or a movie ticket, you can have the very best. We know you can buy cheaper editions or even get the classics for free, but a great deal is getting more than you paid for and being happy with what you got, and we will give you that!

Please note the following differences between the free sample and the full book:

In the Go to... menu of the free sample, the table of contents button is grayed out and cannot be selected, but the table of contents is available from the Go to... menu in the full book.

Navigation from chapter to chapter using the 5-way controller is not available in the free sample but is available in the full book.

Images in the free sample are zoomed to full screen on some devices, so the caption does not display with the image, rather on the following page. In the full book, the caption displays with the image (or at least the first portion of the caption, depending on the text size selected by the reader).

5.0 out of 5 stars Best way to read such a great novel July 18, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read both the free classic and this (Maude translation) version of Anna Karenina and, for me, there truly was a big difference between the two. This translation is so much easier to read and there were no typos -- definitely worth paying for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Completely Satisfying September 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I won't go into the literary or artistic worth of Anna Karenina except for one thing. Tolstoy's writing about the Russian countryside and even agricultural practice is so picturesque and atmospheric that you feel like you can smell the various crops. Superb writing.

This Carefully Crafted Classics version of Anna Karenina was excellent. The Maude translation, yes, does show its age, and more than a bit. But it has to be better than certain translations of other classic Russian works I've read over the past couple of years. And I appreciated the embedded footnotes. They provided good explanation of context and translation of the frequent use of French without wrecking the flow. This version is a steal at the price and highly recommended. I'm subtracting a star because of the dated translation. Also because of the weird use of Western first name and Russian patronymic, which I find jarring but which other readers might not object to at all.

How neat would it be to be able to toggle a phrase from English to Russian, just to see what the original was? C'mon, developers; help us out here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally worth the extra couple dollars! March 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I really appreciated the cleanliness of the text! An edition like this really makes a big difference--without the irritation of typos, I was free to enjoy the beauty of this classic. It's totally worth the extra couple dollars. This is a beautiful novel and I can't wait to read it again.

Anna Karenina is an outstanding classic love story. I was pleased that eh $2.99 translation was good and easy to read. There is no need for the consumer to waste additional money for the more expensive translations offered for the Kindle.

Much better than the free kindle version both in terms of readability and extra features. The Maude translation is much better than the other. Chapter markers and the Tolstoy biography are nice extras. Worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anna Karenina (Maude Translation) October 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book to read on my kindle. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I am about 30% through the book and have not found any obvious typos. The translation seems very easy to follow and I can picture each scene easily as I read. I especially enjoyed the preface of this translation. It has photos of Tolstoy, an essay about his philosophy, and then two different lists of characters that are very helpful. There's also information about Russian names that helps you understand the relationships of the characters as you read. This is my first experience reading Tolstoy and I read many reviews trying to decide which translation to buy. I am very happy with this one and would recommend it to anyone.

This is a great translation, i'm really enjoying the story. It's much easier to read than i anticipated. I would not pay the $14.99 or whatever it is for the Oprah version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read! January 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For those of you who have tried to read Russian novels in the past and given up because you got lost in all the characters or the conversations in French or German, this is the translation for you. There is a very useful list of characters at the end organized both by family members and by order of appearance in the book. In addition, you will find a list explaining unfamiliar Russian terms. Within the story itself, a translation of all French and German expressions or dialogues appears immediately after the text.

3.0 out of 5 stars did not meet expectations
Disappointed in the depiction of women. Story telling was also lacking. Perhaps it was the interpretation but I doubt it.
