5.0 out of 5 stars Will Karen get a pet of her own?, August 6, 2010
Synopsis: Six year old Karen Brewer wishes she had a pet of her own. When she goes to her father's big house during the weekend, she is angry that Emily Michelle is getting all the attention because she has been crying a lot and nobody knows why. Karen and Andrew don't like the fact that they are there only for the weekend, and nobody is paying any attention to them, because Emily is now the youngest in the family and she is getting all the attention. Even Kristy couldn't spend any time with Karen because she had to babysit Emily and try to calm her down. Karen doesn't like having a little sister like Emily.

Things don't go any better the next morning when everyone has to take Emily to the doctor, and Karen gets moody that nobody is paying any attention to her. When everyone leaves, Karen feels alone and wishes she could have a pet of her own. After playing with Hannie and her pet cat Pat, the family returns from the doctor and Elizabeth (Karen's stepmother) tells her that Emily would have to have an appointment to have tubes fixed in her ears for her infection, which would take place two weekends from then. Karen gets really angry at this because her next visit to her father's is two weekends from now, and she feels that everyone will ignore her next time too and spend all the time at the hospital with Emily. She tries to get everyone's attention in the big house, but everyone keeps fussing over Emily.

Karen feels sad and goes back to her mother's house. There, she asks them if she could get a pet of her own, and they tell her that she can get a small pet. After putting some thought into it, Karen decides to get a parrot, when she suddenly sees a small bird lying on the ground. She feels sorry for it and decides to take care of it and keep it as her pet, and her parents agree. She names the bird Magic Tastee and takes good care of it, including getting up at night to feed it and making sure it stays warm. Later, when Kristy calls her and tells her about Emily's operation, Karen feels bad for getting angry at Emily when she was not feeling well and at the same time, she is also scared that Magic Tastee might fly away one day and she doesn't want him to. Can she make up with Emily for her rotten behavior? Will she be able to keep Magic Tastee after all?

Review: I thought this was a really nicely written book that anyone could relate to. We have all passed that phase when we get jealous of someone else getting more attention than us, so it was easy to understand why Karen was being so upset in the beginning when everyone was paying more attention to Emily. I also liked how Karen starts becoming more responsible when she has to take care of the bird, and she realizes why everyone back at her father's house was being so fussy over Emily. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book that had a good ending to it.

The illustrations provided by Susan Tang were also drawn beautifully and I especially liked the ones where Karen finds Magic Tastee lying on the ground, and when she shows him in their Show and Share at Ms. Colman's class.
Overall, I think anyone who has an elder or younger sibling and relate to this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes reading the series.
