There are religious texts set to music for choir and orchestra that outrank Jenkins's "Stabat Mater", but for moments of orchestral and choral effectiveness, the Jenkins is most commendable. It is always listenable and often moving. There is a sameness to the listening experience as the music evolves... Jenkins seems more intent of creating an effect than in giving this ancient poem a new reading or a new life. I do admire the work, however, and would pay well to hear it in live concert should that opportunity arise. In the meantime, this recording a good value for the dollar.

This recording of Karl Jenkins' Stabat Mater shows the depth of the grief of the mother of Jesus. Using the languages of the period, Aramaic and early Arabic, Jenkins' shows emotions through a 13th century poem set to soaring music. The middle eastern emphasis with native percussion instruments interprets the story in heart-rending tones, emerging with a chorus of hope at the conclusion.

Perhaps snobby, overly sophistacated critics might poo-poo Jenkins, but I find his music exciting, varied and well worth listening to over and over again. This recently written Stabat Mater is absolutely beautiful, in parts exciting. It is so good to find a contemporary composer who believes in melody. Bravo, Karl. Keep writing and I will keep buying.

Very often I find when I purchase a new cd it takes me a while to grow to love it . Not with this cd however. From the very first time I heard it I was hooked. I am in a choir and we are currently learning. Now I cannot wait for our concert. I would highly recommend this cd to anybody who likes classical music which is slightly different , and particularly to anybody who is a fan of Karl Jenkins. 5 stars at least ..... If you're a fan of sacred/choral music, I highly recommend Stabat Mater. Beautiful singing and fine composition from a living composer. I especially like the Ave Verum.

Saw this piece performed in Victoria Texas and was moved by the music. Stunning CD that in my opinion could appeal to a wide audience regardless of religious beliefs. Some of the movements are among the most beautiful Jenkins has composed. After the concert in Victoria, I met an attendee who was an expert in the many Stabat Maters already out there. He liked Jenkins interpretation and said "I might have to re-evaluate my approach to Stabat Mater". Highly recommended in my opinion. I can't say the same for other Jenkins work but really like this one. Oh, it may take a few listenings to fully appreciate this work.

Excellent CD, received my whole shipment in a very timely manner. Have given out most as gifts.

I'm listening to this right now on XM Vox. It's powerful. It's a delight.
