I usually buy books on amazon.com and have never had a problem before. With this book, the timing was better than perfect, but the edition is not good. I understand it's not amazon's fault, but It has an errata page with about 30 typos along the complete book. I think a couple of them are acceptable, but in this case, the books should be taken out of market and replaced by a good edition.

Professor Goodman is a very good writer and has done an excelent job chronicling the life and times of a pioneering engineer. He did his homework and the endproduct is both informative and entertaining. I have been reading it everyday on my long commute from SF to Oakland via MUNI and BART. Helps me understand some of the good and bad paralles to my own career and what it took to be one of the best. Timing is great for me in reformulating my next professional moves in life. Obviously Karl made quite a few of his own.Pedco 4/14/11

Most will agree this is the most comprehensive book available about Karl Terzaghi. A well-researched, worthwhile book about a very interesting engineer.

A well written book on Karl's life and the early history and major players in geotechnical engineering. Some real insights as to the role of geology and computation in soil and rock mechanics. Well written, but not a page turner. Recommended.

Wow, what a life Karl had, and Professor Goodman has really captured the essence of his life! The opportunity to relive someone's adventures, challenges and tragedies, all the while exploring the cusp of a new engineering field in a world that was in tremendous upheaval, was amazing. Thank you to Karl's family for sharing those very personal journals, and to Professor Goodman for weaving them into an incredible read. It's an inspiring book that you won't be able to put down!
