'Death From Above' has a new meaning.

Karl Alexander was an adrenaline junky. Whether flying Harriers in the Marines, piloting the shuttle for NASA, or as the chief astronaut for StrataCorp Space Flight he was only happy at five Gs. 4.0 out of 5 stars The great adventure! October 9, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Karl's Last Flight is indeed the great adventure. It sounds like he must have had many in his fast paced, active life.

With Karl at the helm, we should all sleep easier at night. This is one fast paced action thriller from page one clear up to the end. The characters are just so great, I feel like I know each and everyone of them.

The opening chapter was great! There is no doubt that Mr. Sands has intimate knowledge of the Marines and all types of aircraft, from a space shuttle to a Harrier and a MIG 15. The first chapter was a whirlwind of adventure with everything going wrong, but Karl manages to keep his head and survive against all odds, even though he puts the world on the brink of another war.

You can't help but fall in love with all his quirky characters, and hate the monsters who live only to torture and kill. He's also quite a name dropper.

The entire novel is two harrowing adventures, one taking place around twenty years before the current adventure, told in flashbacks and the ending is a fingernail biting, edge of your seat journey through hell.

This is a top notched thriller and could be a top seller if Mr. Sands would take the time to go through it carefully and edit it. Most are just typos, but he has a tendency to leave out or double up on so many small words. It would be a much nicer read with a bit of editing, but the excitement factor keeps you reading to the very last page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but seriously needs editting January 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is another great book from Mr. Sands, dealing with terrorists and marines. The main character was a Marine pilot turned astronaut, who due to an accident crash lands and gets into a situation more dangerous then one he experienced many years prior. With well defined characters, a beautiful woman, spies, terrorist and lots of action this is a great story.

I had no problem with the story. However, this is Mr. Sands third book (I think) and all three are laid out identically. Each has the current actual story intermixed almost every other chapter with a flashback to a another prior story in the main character's past. I am not a big fan of flashbacks, I would almost rather have the two stories split apart, particularily where having the character flashback does not cause him to remember something pertinent/useful to the current story. In his "Faithful Warrior" book the main character at least recalled a current bad guy from his past. Also like his other 2 books, this one needs editting. I downloaded my copy only 2 days ago, so this has to be the latest copy, but this has many more errors then the other 2 books combined. Just using spell check in Word would have caught a quarter of the errors and Word's grammer check would have flagged another quarter. Hopefully a good edit of the book would have caught most of the rest of the errors.

I really enjoy his character Kharzai, who shows up in all three of his books. I think Mr. Sands needs to write a book about Kharzai's start and rise in the CIA.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Poor Editing June 7, 2014
By carll
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story was a good one, maybe a little too far-fetched, but still entertaining. To have two separate stories going one simultaneously was annoying, and there was really no convergence, so it was mostly distracting, unless this was because the story itself was not long enough to justify a book. Finally, this ebook is in serious need of editing. There were numerous typos, incorrect words used (e.g. "your" instead of "you're", "where" instead of "were", and extraneous words which should have been left on the cutting-room floor).

4.0 out of 5 stars I am a Basil Sands Fan October 22, 2013

I really like the way Basil tells a story. I like the method of going back in a characters past telling a seperate story inside the current story. I hope he keeps Karl around. I liked his character. I like a good fast read that I can enjoy and do not have to spend months reading it. I also like that his bad guys are BAD guys and his good guys are flawed but they are inherintly good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read May 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a pilot, I am naturally attracted to books that involve any type of aviation. This book was less about aviation and more about a fast-paced, wild ride through some interesting adventures. The characters were defined well, the story was believable, and the writing was good. If you want some action, this book delivers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Like trying to read two books at once May 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although the action was fast-paced, I was severly distracted by the constant fliiping back and forth between two different flashbacks --- much like trying to read two books at the same time! Also, this edition is badly in need of editing.
Perhaps I was just lucky, but I managed to purchase the Kindle download for $0.99, and for that reason can't complain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read
I enjoy this genre of book, it was a pretty quick read. I thought the author did a good job describing the action, maybe too good when it came to some of the blood and guts parts!
